Quote from: 'trout' pid='96111' dateline='1472512895'I would think that Mr Cotton would not be adverse to putting $75 worth of coins into one of his wrappers and add $100 to the price

To be fair, he does have other overheads besides the coins themselves. Rolling machines aren't exactly cheap, for starters.

I really don't give a rats arse how much his basement wrapping operation costs him to run.
Next moment you will be telling me how much of a fantastic asset he is to the coin community (NOT) :dodgy:

I suspect "We shall see....NOT" will be the story. Regardless he will likely set price to what the market will bear -after all he is not in the game to minimise profit.

Nope. In my book, the vast majority of the numismatic industry is dodgy, from the mints down. I have a very few dealers I will support, because they've done the right thing by me, and that's about it.

Why anyone would consider this basement wrapping operation that cotton and Co have going on is a Legitimate business operation is beyond my understanding ??
He is doing what any basement slabber does But because he is doing it large scale it all of a sudden becomes "kosher" , I don't think so !!!
With the likes of "Fortymillion" amongst his distribution network it looks like he has picked the sleazy end of the eBay seller spectrum to distribute these "things" as well

How is it any less legitimate than Armaguard or Prosegur rolls?

At the end of the day, its just packaging. Anybody can do it. Including you and me. In fact, I did do it, producing my own CoF state coin rolls, remember? I even sold a set, though that was never the intent.

What matters is the contents, not the package. Which is dodgier? A repacked Armaguard roll with rubbish in the middle, or a certified roll made by someone who puts their name to it? If I was in the market, which I should point out I'm not, I would take the certified roll any day.

Note that this has nothing to do with price. As I've said before, the price on these rolls is too high for my liking. That said, I do understand the commercial desire to recover capital costs, so that in itself does not make it dodgy.

What if we were talking about Coronation rolls? Would a $179 Coronation black roll be dodgy compared to a green Prosegur roll? If I sold you one of my rolls, how would you know that I hadn't opened it and replaced the inner coins? What comeback would you have if I did?

I think you need to take a step back and think about this whole issue rationally, and without the underlying assumptions you seem to have. There really is no difference between one commercial enterprise and another. Its what they do and how they do it that separates them.

I didn't realise they were being sold on feebay as well so I had to suss them out. So he has two dealers (that I hadn't heard of before) selling them and people on facebook that are selling for $100 less so if I was one of the lot selling for $999 I'd want to know why I'm paying more than others unless they're just charging more because they're dealers.

In my search I also found armor guard rolls so if it was meant to be a woolies only thing why did a secrurity company get coins so they can roll them when woolies got all bags, very odd.

I also see apcgs has a box of para in the folders so how do these people get them, all very very suss going on's if you ask me. A box of 25 for $549 so that's $21.96 ea

With 1 hour to go this carded para one is $7.50 so be interesting to see how much it goes for

WTF 590 5 coin carded sets sold and still have some left, this has been a total joke so I wonder if woolies will get sucked in again.

In a few years if this sort of thing keeps going I think it will only be scumbags and parasites involved with numismatics because sooner or later people/collectors will get sick of all this sort of thing and find other thing to fill in time :dash1:

In the first two links I see 40mill is charging $18 post and the other bloke has free post.

Nothing odd at all. He took them out of bags and re-rolled them, to prove a point. Read the description.

This backs up my argument rather well, actually.

I am getting pretty disenchanted with all the shenanigans over the last few months with the sleazy dealers and also RAM as well.

Maybe I should make up a few rolls of Canberra florins and certify them myself ( that seems to be OK these days) and put a poxy holographic fish on the wrapper.
That way they would be the real deal and Kosher AY :dodgy:

Its a new era that's for sure, new breed of Dealers, new breed of snake oil salespeople. I've been a hobby collector of mainly Pre-Dec. since my School days so don't know much about the money making or Pro. side of Numismatics but Social Media has sure brought out the dark side in many people, its just greed and a get rich quick mentality, surely the bubble will burst when the average Punter wakes up to whats going on.

Sure thing. Go for it. As long as the contents were actually as described, and you stood by them, there would be no problem.

All anyone really has is their reputation when you think of it. We put so much stock in the RAM and the security companies, but I've been shafted by both. My State coin sacks were short about $5 across 18 sacks. I've had Armaguard sacks which were short, and which contained foreign coins. Why should I trust either of them, or anyone else for that matter?

You'd probably be a safer bet I reckon.

Are you taking pre-orders (with a deposit) now trout? "Actual Image Soon" so we don't really know what exactly we are committing to buy.
That is what I don't like about the sales pitch but it's quite legal. Plenty of other businesses do the same thing and the RAM has used 'teaser' advertising; even going to the extent of having a Government Minister doing the spruiking.

So, as far as I am concerned, just as on the nose are the Franklin Mint, Bradford Exchange and the companies that have catalogues (featuring 'exclusive' bargains) put into newspapers. Only sensible policy, if you disagree with their methods, is to ignore them. If enough people do that they will be stuck with the product and have to rethink their strategy -if they get enough sales then it is a capitalist market success story.

I am more concerned with some of the dubious (and arguably illegal) practices of banks, insurance companies, health funds and such like.
