This morning on The Morning Show on Channel 7, two of the Royal Australian Mint Coin Program Ambassadors basketball player Patty Mills and paratriathlete Kate Doughty made an exciting announcement about an upcoming coin program for the Olympics and Paralympics.

To celebrate Rio 2016, Woolworths and the Mint have joined forces to create six Royal Australian Mint commemorative coins. The $2 coins will be available from Woolworths supermarkets nationwide from the 19th July in the lead-up and throughout the Olympic and Paralympic games.

There will be 12 million coins produced in six different designs. The five Olympic coins feature 32 sport motifs ranging from volleyball, judo, boxing to running and feature the colours of the Olympic rings. The Paralympic coin features a wheelchair in motion and the colours synonymous with the Australian Paralympic Team, being the first multi-coloured $2 coin. The popular collector items pay homage to the Australian Olympic and Paralympic team.

Thanks for the heads-up (bad pun there I'm afraid) Jen! Can get them with the weekly shopping

Gee what is it with the bloody mint/government and playing favourites with big business. Something big is going on and looks very much like the gov wants to sell the mint and this gives big business a taste of the profits they can make.

So 12 million, so I wonder how many of each of the designs and if they'll be an equal amount or one design will have a lot more mintage and I wonder what they mean by "multi-coloured" so there must be more than 2 as they've already done that a few times but the first wasn't for circulation with the 2012 poppy but then there was the 2015 with the two tone rings.

What a coup this is for woolies so I wonder if they'll make it up here or they'll only be a capitol city thing so the chances are I'll never get to see one besides seeing the pic's everyone puts up :( I'm really starting to hate coin collecting in austalia as you either have to live in a capitol or have very deep pockets that I do not :cray:

SO, What's the GO here.
Can you get all the different coins at once from Woolies , Or do you have to do several shops and hope to get them in your change??
Can you simply buy them from the RAM site instead ?

Those and more questions will no doubt be answered in the days ahead.
Unlikely you will be able to walk off the street & get ten at face value
there will be some catch attached to the whole thing.

Cynical me thinks that Woolworths will not be taking part purely as an act of charity to our Olympic team (or coin collectors) but will expect something in return -minimum purchase first, sign up for 'loyalty' programme, give them lots of your personal details for their marketing or some such.
Thinking is dangerous, it makes you think. That\'s why many people avoid it.

I think you might have to exchange your first born!

Does that get you the full set?
What do you get for a kidney? Needs to be an option for a childless person.

I sincerely hope that this is Not going to be another of the "Get the album and add weekly" and only available to Woolworth shoppers like the Newspaper tokens/coins were :dodgy:

Why are we complaining all ready.   Why don't we wait and see what the requirements are before we start complaining.

Yes, I want the coins, yes I want the requirements but I am forced to wait.

I can wait, patiently.

I think our real complaint is they make a breathless announcement of an "exciting' initiative with no details of how it will work.
They have form for that, then usually the details turn out to be counter the expectations they have fostered.

:agreed:
I have to agree with you Mate as RAM seem to be making the sourcing of their new coins more difficult and expensive all the time.
What is so hard about RAM selling rolls or baggies of the new circulating  coins directly to collectors at face value (Plus postage of course) instead of buying newspapers or shopping at a certain supermarket in order to acquire the coins :dash1:
They can do this in Canada and the US so why do RAM insist on making it so bloody difficult all the time???
