What the hell is Clive Palmer up to? Three full pages of advertisements, in newspapers all around the country, spruiking that the Clive Palmer Foundation has donated 32,900,000 doses of an as yet unproven drug to help the country recover from Covid-19. This drug  has been endorsed by Donald Trump, which is a worry.
On past form I think there must be an ulterior motive.

Speaking of full page advertisements have you noticed Harvey Norman's blitz lately? Eleven full pages in just the Sydney Morning Herald today.

An article in the Sydney Morning Herald today says " In newspapers around the world, the achievements of Australia and New Zealand are being written about with a tone of admiration and outright envy." This referring to Covid-19.
Certainly we have done reasonably well but there are plenty of countries have done better (and sadly, many worse).
One I am interested in is Fiji -18 cases, 12 recovered (6 remaining reported to be "comfortable") and no new cases reported for two weeks. Their infection rate per capita is well less than 10% of that of Australia and New Zealand.
"Why is it so?" as a long ago professor used to ask. Answer is the Government very quickly went hard with restrictions, quarantine measures and curfews. This was coupled with severe penalties, well publicised, for breaches.
Have a look at the statistics attached. Note that a click on a column header will sort the table by the numbers in that column. I found India and Japan figures of interest too.

Referring to my previous comments about the Covidsafe app distance measuring accuracy this seems to confirm my opinion that it does not measure 1.5m -Bluetooth is just not capable of that.
"While initial reporting and government explanations of the app suggested it only collected IDs from phones with COVIDSafe within 1.5 metres for more than 15 minutes, it in fact collects IDs from all phones within Bluetooth range." "This can't be achieved with extreme accuracy as different environments provide different Bluetooth signals and calculating the probable distance can be out by up to 100%"
Jessica Glenn, executive chair of technology firm QTE.am, which has analysed the app.

Jeff. I was wondering the same thing about distance as well as about the 15 minutes.
I would prefer. I think the whole "1.5m" And "close contact for 15 minutes" are extremely rough and inaccurate guidelines.
If you walk past someone in a supermarket and they cough in your face, you could be infected in a few seconds of contact.

It makes more sense to me to collect all contacts regardless of distance or time.
All it would mean is more tests done, and more negative tests is fine, but missing a positive test is much worse.

Re. Comparing Australia/NZ/Fiji
Australia and NZ are much closer to UK/USA/other developed countries in many ways (e.g. international travel, domestic  travel/shopping habits, health system abilities) so I can see why Fiji is not being compared the same way.
That is not to say they have not done well.
They have done very well.
I think we have had a big dose of luck, in that we had some delay to watch how things went elsewhere before we had to take action.
I think our politicians dithered way too much before taking good action, but it's turned out well so far.
I think the population here has responded extremely well (on the whole).
Look at the protests about restrictions in America, they miss that thier rights come with responsibilities too.
The right to have close contact with all and sundry needs to be balanced with the results of doing so.
The results are many tragic deaths - not just predicted, but it's actually happened - yet this is just not important to some.

And these protesters think that having their guns with them is going to help the situation. Goodness gravy!

Coronavirus app tracing capability not yet operational, despite 4 million downloads

Prime Minister Scott Morrison has called the contact-tracing app a vital tool in protecting Australians against coronavirus.
But the ABC has confirmed that if a person tests positive to coronavirus today, the information on their app will not be passed on to contact tracers, because states and territories are still working out how the system will operate.
"The rules on privacy are being finalised, along with final IT testing," a Department of Health spokesman said.
"The system will be operational next week ahead of the decision on possible easing of restrictions."
Deputy Chief Medical Officer Michael Kidd conceded there had been a delay in health officials being able to access the data.

Can these guys get anything right?

Yeah, contact through travel is the key to the spread of infection no doubt. 100 years ago the Spanish flu killed 50 million world wide in a time when international travel was only by ships, unlike today where destinations are reached just about instantly. I've heard it said the thousands of soldiers returning home from the great war had something to do with the spread of infection back then. I think we've done pretty well this time round, so far anyway.
As we age we lose three things, one is our memory and arrrrr I've forgotten the other two!

Nice to see a slight slowing in the deaths per day from around 7000 to around 4000 a day over the past few days. No decline in the number of cases though. That is still going through the roof at the 80 to 90 thousand new cases a day. Looks like our next holidays will all be to New Zealand.

JeffH

One New Zealand family used their lockdown time productively. Took them four days to put it all together. And mostly a great job of keeping straight  faces.
