What, the pad-printed one? Those things don't count, cos they're granny-bait, not 'proper' coins. :P

Yeah I know but still :winkextra:
I'm not overly impressed with the painted one's that get all the chips on them let alone the so called "missing" paint error :dash1:

I don't know if I'd call the one's where the paint is on the obverse an error either or just a f..up  they could be a possible mint sport as well.

No they're not. They won't say what they are, claiming its proprietary tech, but they have vehemently denied them being pad printed.

And I believe them, since you can't get the paint into the grooves with a pad.

Well, isn't every error a f%&*up? I mean, the mule, just for starters...

And sports are a whole 'nother thing. If they're in circulation AND 'possible' (IE, not crap like double-headers that can't exist accidentally), I very much doubt they can be called sports.

Still, we DO have to come up with a new way of looking at this, because if we're going to accept faults in hitting a bit of metal with a bigger bit of metal, and slapping ink on paper or plastic, then we really should accept failures in putting paint on metal too.

The hard part, as I was saying last night, is differentiating between something that happened during the production process and something done in the shed. Provenance is likely to play a big part in that, as it does in other fields, like autograph collecting for example.

Knowing what you mean and agreeing with it are two different things.

Seriously, we need to put our heads together and come up with a way to handle painted metal, because its not going to go away anytime soon.

Do we treat them like other errors and flaws, or do we follow the die-cast collectors who regard damaged or missing paint as a negative? Or something in between?

Well not always 1/18 DeLorean DMC-12

Getting a consensus on these will be hard;
•Some flaked off paint I suggest is a negative.
•Missing paint ex mint is a positive but how do you prove it came that way and paint hasn't been removed post mint? And, what about coins that come in vanilla and flavoured versions -think $2 poppy?
•Paint on wrong side of coins is a positive.
•Paint on a wrong coin is a positive. Say an elder $2 accidentally mixed in with painted ones. Are there any such known?
•Wrong colour paint is a positive. Probably no examples I suspect and, maybe, colour can be altered with chemical treatment (negative).
Just my initial thoughts.

What a can of worms this may prove to be.

let me  put this simply for you McDuckky:ok:
The paint itself is added POST MINT and is nothing more than a decoration added to the coin AFTER it comes out of the Minting press.
Paint can be removed with ease and with some expertise can be lifted and moved to another coin or the obverse of the same coin if so desired.
The colour of the Paint can also be altered .
So proving something paint related as an error is a tough call because the paint can be manipulated Post Mint with relative ease.
Now these elders or wrong coins in the baggies being called errors is simply ridicules.

Now if there is an error that has affected the Metal of the coin during the Minting process then YES that is "Kosher" But to me personally these Paint "errors" are Highly suspect :ok:

WAAAYYY too simply, I'm afraid. We can't just ignore the paint entirely, nor can we stop at the metal striking and call everything else post-minting. Imagine if we did that with banknotes, where there are multiple production steps to arrive at the finished note? We saw some notes last night which were missing colours (ALL colour on one side of a $10), numbers, or had two different numbers on the one note. By your definition, none of them would be errors, would they?

Besides, I'd just LOVE to see you move the paint from one side to the other. Or even describe HOW to. :dodgy:

As for Jeff, in no particular order...

Colour variations have never impressed me, Remember the soapy green serials saga? ;)

The poppies were two different coins, just like the millennium flags were. I don't think they're going to be dumb enough to release the same coin with and without paint, especially given the design features to hold onto the paint.

LOVE that car! I'd hate to think what the asking price is, given that even 'cheap and nasty' time machine versions are around $100+.

Yes, its a can of worms. But one we can't ignore I think.

I have absolutely NO problems ignoring these "error" coloured coins as errors are not my "Bag" .
I much prefer my coins to be as perfect as I can find them, buggered up coins can be mildly interesting to me But a Gem Pre Decimal will hold my interest for far longer

Each to their own, I guess...

There are people who preferred photoshopped supermodels too.

As Cindy Crawford once said,
"I Wish I Looked Like Cindy Crawford".

Me, I prefer my women kind of like my cars... with a few reminders of the roads they've travelled.

Ditto for my coins. ;)

I'm not going there.

Maybe we should have a separate thread for how to consider painted coin 'errors'.

got 2 blue ring octopus $2 coins today at another woolies - single coins - no bags to boast about

then went to the op-shop at the same shopping centre and got a new summer dress, slinky for the grandie and a dominoes set, some preserving jars and two tourist souvenir spoons (a parrot and a dieters spoon) and had a great chat to the volunteers there

I am starting to enjoy going out to get the coloured coins

the hubby even let me keep both of the blue ringed octopuses for my book - sweet
