I'm amazed they ever get any takers. Are people really that stupid? :dodgy:
yeh that has me stumped too

What was it PT Barnum said? ;)

Anyway, just off to pick up my 5 coins, and hopefully swap 20 loose ones for a sealed bag if they'll let me.

Actual mintage is 2.5 million I'm told. Oh, and the AFP are going after at least one of the ebay 'pond scum'. YAY! :yahoo:

I was under the impression that the 5 coin carded sets were not available until the 27th, Let us know how you fare Mate :) .

Which of the pond scum are we talking about that the AFP have an "interest" in ?

Presumably one of the Woolies or Armaguard employees who sold them last week.

OK, so I got my five loose coins, then added another 20 I already had, and asked for a sealed bag in exchange.

Three stores refused, citing new rules which arrived yesterday. I read them, but I reckon its a broad interpretation of what it says. So I've lodged a complaint, and will follow up with another complaint by email. And tomorrow will do the rounds of other stores and see if I can get satisfaction.

One good thing... at one of the stores which refused, the manager went off to make a phone call. Things were quiet, and I said to the girl "Well, how many can I have then? Just so this isn't a wasted trip?". And she gave me 15 more. So its a small victory. :)

Anyway, this whole deal is going to be totally wrecked by Monday when the next coins hit. I'm NOT going to be able to build a set of bags like I hoped, and even handfuls of grotty loose ones are going to be a stretch.

But over my dead body will I be buying $15 carded ones, which, BTW, are limit one, with purchase, no exceptions, for the exact same coins presumably in the same bagmarked condition.

The 5 coin cards are available from the RAM shop from next Wednesday so I am just going to get a couple of these so that I don't have to "Beg" for them at a store that I  Hate shopping at :ok:
I would use at least $10 in petrol just to drive into town and get to Woolies so I would rather spend the $10 on postage to get my coin "Fix" from RAM direct.
There is NO way the coins in the cards will be as badly dinged up as the ones available from the till and I have absolutely NO problem paying a $1 premium to get a better coin :)

Some people are pretty bitter, with all the other problems with the world, I would have thought you could let harmless commerce be.

'Harmless Commerce'???? There's no such thing.

The problem with commerce is it puts profit above all else. In fact, it gives zero weight to anything BUT profit, or at least things which affect the bottom line.

Not that everyone working for a business is going to be one of the 'sheeple', but enough are that it makes it damned near impossible to deal with them, and they're always the one in charge it seems. It doesn't take much to win people over, which is the strange thing. You would think that retailers especially would be sensitive to this. It costs ten times more to win a new customer than to keep an existing one, and when you consider that a determined aggrieved former client will go out of his or her way to tell everyone about their bad experience, that 'network effect' can multiply the damage a hundredfold. This is how Woolies got in the poo in the first place, then every move they've made in the past few years has just compounded it.

Anyway, today's hunt went a little better than I expected. I set off on the way to the dentist via a detour through the NE suburbs. Swapped the 25 loose coins for a bag (YAY!), picked up enough loose coins to build another bag, and ended up at Eastland, where they'd only give me 2 coins. Oh well.

So while I was there I thought I'd pop over to Heathmont where the nice lady whose name I couldn't recall from CBA Brandon Park had moved to. Walked in, stood in line for ages, got to the counter, saw the name tag, and said "Are you Kerry from Brandon Park?" "Yes" "Oh, cool.. remember me?" "You're the copper coin man! I've got some $5 coins, do you want them?" "Sure, I'll take anything". So we're chatting about how she likes the new branch and everything, and I mention the hunt. "Oh! My mum got one, but she won't let me have it!" "Would you like one?" At which point she grinned from ear to ear, and she swapped me a green one she'd just gotten. She was over the moon, hopping around excitedly and showing everyone in the branch. I felt like Santa Claus!

Then I recalled there was some cheap ham at Wantirna, which was on my way to the dentist. I parked the car, spotted a Bendigo Bank, and popped in to grab a couple of their lovely calico sacks. And we got chatting, as you do, and I mentioned Kerry and the coin. "Oh, we're both coin collectors too, but we haven't seen these ones yet!" "Would you like a couple?". And the whole Santa thing played out again, this time with an orange swap. They even showed the manager, who grumped that collecting was silly, but meh. And then they offered me a big sack of copper, and we exchanged email addresses.

Follow that up with a few more woolies on the way to the dentist, and I managed to swap another 2 bags.

So three bags, four $5 coins, about $6 of copper, and a numb mouth and tingly nose. Oh, and drowned getting back to the car (it had been clear and sunny when I went in). Not a bad day at all, I reckon. :)

Don't pay more than Official Issue Price!
It has come to our attention that certain people are selling the Royal Australian Mint's soon-to-be-released 2016 $2 Australian Olympic Team BU Set on the net at way above the Official Issue Price. We would like to reassure all collectors that this set will be available in less than a week, from July 27, and that it will be available at Downies at the affordable Official Issue Price of just $15. Don't pay more than Official Issue Price!

That was good of them.
Wonder if they will take the message down when it sells out?
