I found a reference but it is before the year 1813 that Mark said.
...." in late 1800 The Porpoise arrived in Sydney Cove with almost 4 tons (550 pounds worth) of 1 ounce Cartwheel pennies struck by Matthew Boulton".

Taken from www.australianstamp.com/coin-web/aust/earlyas/proclmtn.htm

I know we desperately needed coin but perhaps the old Cartwheels were good ballast for the ships coming out here ?

I think the poor old public servants ended up with them:

The matter being referred to the Committee (of the Privy Council) on Trade and Plantations, £550 worth of pence was taken from a shipment intended for the Cape of Good Hope, and a promise given of £350 worth of halfpennies and £300 worth of farthings as soon as they could be coined.

The pennies were forwarded to Hunter by the Porpoise with instructions to use them for public service payments and to "frame a suitable ordinance" to prevent their export. The £350 worth of halfpennies and £300 worth of farthings arrived over a year later in the Royal Admiral making a total of £1,200 worth of coin (face value). King took the opportunity to proclaim local values "for all the specie legally circulating in this colony . . . at which they shall be considered and be a legal tender in all payments or transactions in this colony". The copper coins were to circulate at twice their face value, and the export or import of more than five pounds of them (whether face or nominal value is not stated) was prohibited under penalty of forfeiture of the amount imported or exported and a fine of three times the amount.

It appears that it was the arrival of these copper coins that caused King to pass his proclamation.  Perhaps that is why the halfpenny and farthing do not appear in the proclamation.  They had not "officially" arrived in the colony at the time as King was waiting for them to be minted and shipped.

Probably would have made good ballast as well.

I find proclamation/Colonial coins fascinating simply because anything round and made of an intrinsic metal had real worth regardless of where they were made.:good:
Unlike todays currency that has NO intrinsic value and the paper money is based on a Fiat trust:angel:

Did any of those 'dollars from the mint at Mexico' ever arrive?

Dunno. But the coins of inferior value are still among us. I get a couple out of every sack, and they're all worth less that what they purport to be. :(

And the forgers are still at it too. Local rag had a piece on the fake $100's doing the rounds. Lots of unhappy victims caught out by them.

I'd call the duit a colonial coin.  A fraction of a true Proclamation coin.  I guess the quarter Stuiver could be a colonial coin but it's a bit late for my liking.  Still, they might have been used in Tassie where colonial coins were used longer than elsewhere in Australia.  The 1839 2 cents I wouldn't regard as a colonial coin.
