Any idea of its value if so thanks.

I'd call it a "colonial coin" because it's a well known fraction of a proclamation coin.  But if you called it a proclamation coin I wouldn't have any problem with that either.

Received this one in the post yesterday from last weekends IAG sale. It's a 1778 Eight Reale with what looks like evidence of die clash to the left of the Monarchs head, a pillar and ribbon, also above Monarchs head, outline of top of crown. Very appropriate the last one  Didn't they use screw presses back in the day? I find it remarkable that someone could forget to load a planchet and still manage to go through the slow process of winding the thing without noticing, and then proceed to impart enough pressure to damage the dies. But I love it:biggrin:

An interesting article by Andrew Crellin in the 2005 JNAA - What is a Proclamation Coin?

Unbelievable, I finally secure a star Pagoda then I read this on the PP site, The quest has just expanded :dash1:

QuoteAs to whether you should obtain a star pagoda or the three figure coin I'd probably suggest the star pagoda. These are the coins pictured in the Australian coin catalogue 'McDonalds' and were probably more commonly available. However, the three figure pagodas are larger and have more design elements and I find them more attractive. Of course, finances permitting, I'd probably suggest getting both varieties!

Here is a pic from the PP blog site, Quite an attractive coin IMHO :good:

When I first looked at these Proclamation/Colonial  coins I assumed it would be a relatively easy set to get thinking that there was only barely a handful of different coins to collect to make the set complete.
Boy O Boy was I wrong with that assumption , The more I look into these coins the more I find that are worthy of adding to the collection.
The thing I find fascinating about these coin types is their diversity of design and Origin , There is quite an array of Copper, Silver and gold coins From Many parts of the World  that were used as currency in the early days of Australia's History.
I am having a lot of fun and enjoying learning about these coins and slowly building a small collection.

This one was waiting at A.P. when we returned home the other day. The grade is average but just love the counter stamp, and coupled with a Madrid Mint example, so had to have it. :yahoo: I'm absolutely no authority on this, but has something to do with Sultan of Soumanep / Madura Star. Madura is/was an island off Java back when Indonesia was known as Batavia.

Agree about the proclamation series, and that 8 reales is a lovely variation. Surely could have been used in Australia....
