I guess Australian Proclamation coins should go in this forum.  Proclamation coins and colonial coins are something of a passion of mine and I can remember a long thread on the ACBO forum showing off a lot of them.  One particular member there (Volunteer) posted up a a lot of his amazing coins in that thread.  I was lucky enough to meet Volunteer a few times and he was an older gentleman.  It occurred to me this afternoon that I haven't seen Volunteer online for a LONG time, several months at least.  I do hope he is OK.  Here's a few proclamation coins for you Les, where ever you happen to be.

1791 Gulden.  A coin so nice I've posted it twice :yahoo:

Great coins - Thanks for starting this thread
I just joined this good looking forum and find someone with a similar like.
I am no coin expert and started gathering a few Proclamation coins about 18 months ago.
The purists probably would laugh but dont like totally pristine coins I like my old coins to have shown some use and have character.
I particularly like the worn old Lima mint 8 Reale with all the Chinese chop marks.
I like to imagine how many hands its been through and what it tell me if it could speak.
Having said that I don't like to think I am buying total rubbish.
The 1791 Guinea is one of my latest.

cheers

Is this a colonial coin or just an older Brit penny?
It weighs in at 18.49g

Me thinks the above penny followed the withdrawal of the old Cartwheel pennies.   The Rule Britannia was then used right up till the change in UK Currency.

I picked this up several years ago but never did confirm it was proclamation coinage.  It does however appear to be the version pictured by Andrew Crellin in his book  "The coinage of Colonial Australia".  If so then that would make it Bengal Presidency 1793 Silver Rupee, Calcutta Mint.  Relatively common in circulated condition.

Also not sure if that is some sort of chop mark at 5 o'clock on the reverse as it is matched by a similar mark at 7 o'clock on the obverse (hope I got them right)

how the hell do you tell which is the obverse on these?
I have a couple of these and I am struggling to work out which way up they are supposed to be let alone which side is which

I'm with you.  I'm just going by the description in the book.

robbiegal

they used to snip or clip these coins
to ensure that they were sliver

the chop marks in most of the old coins also served the same purpose - to let others know that the coin was genuine

steve - has the coin been sort of clipped in the same spot and then this shows up on both sides?
