I think it's after 2008 Coat of Arms.
The "Last" NCLT Dollar in my collection
is Brisbane Coin Fair Portable Press "B"
mintage as noted (2009) 974.

The "G" Gallipoli is easier to identify.(and scarcer)
The portable press type has a Much thicker Font
for the "G"

This might help.

Prior to 2008 the mark was the same, it was called a mintmark and it was either heavy from a production press or shallow from a mobile press or even earlier to confuse you more a portable version of a production press (maybe someone can confirm this) at Royal shows. CEO Janine Murphy wanted to make changes so she introduced the mintmark, counterstamps and privymarks and their definitions. Sadly she passed away and it was carried on but now we've seen mobile press counterstamp coins struck in Canberra and not at the actual location of the counterstamp which I feel violates how she wanted it to work.

Back to the earlier mintmarks it's only the depth of the mark or heavy/weaker strike of the mark that helps you determine which one it is.

Yep thanks pph, I had seen that analysis before. Very interesting.

In regard to the heavy/shallow strikes, I take it the marks are aligned the same? By that I mean the same angular rotation and radial distance from the centre. It seems to me that the RAM intended for these coins to appear the same not different. :-/

Did you ever find one?

Nup. At least nothing far enough out to detect without Goldie's Rote-a-scope™.

The easiest way to differentiate any MYO from the heavy ones is to look for deformation of the coin at the mintmark. Since the mark is part of the die on the heavies, it looks like any other part of the coin. But since the coin is struck with a couple of tons of pressure at a very small spot by the portable press, the coin does deform slightly. Its really obvious when you have both side by side.

As for nomenclature, well, its just semantics. I think of them all as mintmarks, even though the coins are not actually struck at different mints, as mintmarks used to identify. So counterstamp, privy or whatever, its all the same thing now anyway.

The relevant part of this is whether the coin is struck once at the mint, with whatever mark they put on it, or twice, with the second being the particular mark they're using.

I can see another catalogue project in this, being actual pics of all the marks. I'd volunteer to do it, but I don't have anywhere near a complete set.

That's the intent. There is a big screen over the press, with the image from the inbuilt camera and alignment guides. So the operator just rotates the coin to the right alignment and presto.

But being a manual operation, rotations do vary slightly. Not 90° usually, but enough to be measurable if you're so inclined. Say as much as upsets which are in-tolerance.

As for radial distance, that's fixed and doesn't vary.

For me, its a bit more than nomenclature is just semantics. As a beginner I have to start somewhere.

Yep, thanks for pointing that out. I've got it now.

Edit: I saw the press in operation at Sydney earlier this year. Unfortunately it never occured to me to look closely at what was happening. I can imagine how it could vary slightly.

Trout:  Having gone through your big list from earlier postings, I have some answers for you:

Items 52, 56, 57:  Have a variety that is the letters IRB, located under the neck of the Queen, are either Joined or Separated.
Item 56:   Not only came in a 3 coin pack but there were in separate packaging as well.
Item 74:   Comes in small and large effigy.
Item 83:   "M" Counterstamp coin has a viariety - AU.ST (The full stop is the variety).
item 111:   Came in two issues, you need the "C" Shallow/Portable Press issue.
Item 126:   I would like to see a scan of this Rock Wallaby/Koala Corprate Pack.
Item 155:   Australian Coinage Pack has an overprint Cover version from the Brisbane Coin Show that is a private overprint.   No difference in coins.
Item 166:   This was issued on a card, same size as the coloured $1 animal coins.

Following coins not listed:   "B" Shallow Strike/Counterstamp Holey Dollar, 60th Anniv Korean War End.

2009 Kangaroo coin came in the following configurations:   1. Ordinary $1 Kangaroo.  2.  Master Mint Mark.  3.  Master Mint mark with "C" Counterstamp.

Your list contains only one coloured $1 coin and that is the one for Black caviar.   Is this the only coloured $1 coin you hold or do you have all the rest?

Now, if you wish to complete your $1 collection, I believe one needs to secure the Shallow/Counterstamp issues as well.   You have all the normal circulating and NCLT coins listed, you also list the Privy Marked coins, that is those in the square, so one really needs the shallow/counterstamp coins as well.

It's your collection and your funds.   Have fun.

yes I have all the rest, They are in an album with the Silver proofs.
As these always come out in a series of 6 coins they are easier to maintain if kept separate from the other NCLT issues.

I am not really into collecting Variety's or errors and the shallow stamped coins I am "Still out to lunch" on :ok:

I will get an example of the "shallow" coins and decide for myself if the difference between the 2 types is enough to warrant the effort and expense of acquiring them.

QuoteItem 126: I would like to see a scan of this Rock Wallaby/Koala Corprate Pack.

This one I have absolutely no idea about But I am assuming that the coins are identical to the normal pad printed 2008 coins so there (for Me) is no reason to get them (Different packaging of the same coin equates to "Diddly Squat" to Me)

One way to identify the shallow coins from the heavy press coins is the location of the Reeding on the edge of coin in relation to the "A" of Australia.

The other way is to examine the edge of the recess that the letter is contained in.   The heavy press coins have a very sharp edge whereas the shallow printed coins have a slightly rounded wedge.

I assume same and have not seen this one. I expect it to be the same coin in different packaging.

Quote2008 Rock Wallaby/Koala Corporate Pack

That would be down to me. Most likely I saw it on ebay way back when and included it just in case. Unfortunately I didn't record anything other than the reference above. I just had a quick check and couldn't find one so I deleted it from my list. Mea culpa. :give_rose:
