OK I agree but they do that to all the coins, regardless of the denomination from time eternity.   So what's the difference on the baby set coins to that of the normal circulation coins?

To be quite honest they are both Crappy designs and the baby sets cost quite a bit.
You would think for the money they are asking for these RAM would put a bit of effort into them :dodgy:
I do agree with the counter stamp coins because they are more of a commemoration of an event (ANDA Show).
You are correct tho, If I am to have a "Complete" set everything must be included :ok:

Quote from: 'Goldseeker' pid='27274' dateline='1378517817'a "complete" set/collection of $1 coins, then one must also include all the Portable press/Shallow coins

Only if they are actually different, for instance the 2011 Ram's Head which comes in the 4 coin cards (Privy marks, square) and the 1 coin card (Counterstamp, circle).

If the Portable press/Shallow coins are all counterstamps where some are deep and some are shallow then I wouldn't count them as different.

Are you saying that the portable press coins have the SAME mintmarks but are struck weakly ?

The 2009 year of astronomy proof coin is covered , i'll now tick that bugger off :yahoo:

:yahoo: yep, that's what I'm trying to suggest but I'm really hoping someone who knows for sure will drop buy and explain it.

I have 5 x 2004 Eureka coins which I bought from a dealer. They have counterstamps, even the 'C' is a c/stamp. I presume these are the ones referred to on australian-threepence.com/blog as "RAM and Dealer Sales" and by deduction they are not shallow whereas the portable press are. But they are all counterstamps.

Edit: Note I'm not trying to say you can't tell them apart.

If they are the same but just weakly struck then I see no point in collecting them.
I don't collect errors so why would I want these :ok:

Me neither, like the 2013 "B" c/stamp with the 90 degree rotation, to me its the same coin. Mind you if I woke up and found it lying on my pillow I wouldn't give it the flick. :swoon:

I'm sure someone (pph?) will know if my hunch is right or not. :winkextra:

There seem to be some misconceptions. Strange, because this has been discussed many times before and you lot should know this stuff.

There are two distinctly different coins produced for the mintmarks.

One has one of the mintmarks on the die, and is struck just like any other coin. This is the one you buy from the mint, with mintages up towards 100k-ish.

The other has no mintmark at all. These are produced in MUCH smaller quantities, perhaps 15k total. They are then restruck with whichever mintmark for wherever they're being produced. This is the one where you get to pay your money and push the button on the small press.

Again, they are two different coins. One is not an error of the other.

The confusion arises because while they used to have a raised MM on the heavy press, and an incused MM on the light overstamp, they changed the design to make the heavies look like the overstamps. That makes them harder to identify, and was probably done quite deliberately for that end.

But all the heavies are going to look identical, with the mark as well-stamped as the rest of the coin. The MYO's however will show some variation, in the alignment and depth of the strike, depending on how good the operator is. Personally, I wouldn't consider minor variations to be errors, though clearly that 90° is, as are the missing mintmarks.

So yes Trout, you need both types.

Don't be like that. Its only 4 or 5 each year for the past 900 bazillion years, and at 5 times the price of the heavies.

You KNOW you love it, right?

All the other ones are quite easy to find, these "Shallow" ones are going to be a swine to find :cray:

Some of these Portable Press strikes have lower mintages
than the 2000 Mule.
Some, like the 2007 Bridge "B" was struck at the ANDA show
and some were struck at the EKA show.
Good luck on your quest, the Gallipoli 2005 "G" is tough.

Nah. Just expensive is all. There are around 3-4,000 of each, which is enough to not make it impossible.

You do realise most of the forum has these, and most of the others as well, right? Heck, for the right money, even *I* might be tempted to let go of one... :)

The misconceptions are mostly mine. I figured this would have been discussed before but I wasn't around back then.

Thanks for chiming in Fulvio, I'm still a bit confused, I'll think about it some more. :thank_you:
