Here's what I told him:

---

A Professor he may be, but there is no way for such a coin to be produced legitimately.

If double-struck, the design would be raised, not incused.
If a misfeed, there would be no design under the misfed coin.

For this to happen, the following impossible sequence would have to occur:

Coin A struck and exits the press.
Coin B struck and fails to exit.
Coin A returns and is struck again, imprinting Coin B.
Both coins exit.

Or, what actually happened:

Person C places both Coin A and Coin B in a vice, turns the handle. PROFIT!

Whether you are in fact Person C, or just happened to find three of these in circulation, the fact is you profited, and the buyer got taken for a ride. He will never be able to sell these shed jobs to any collector with half a clue. :(

QuoteThis is what our president of our coin club said about the
coins;
He is a professor at university.

`In both cases it looks as if
the coins have clashed with others in the
minting process, so haven't
ejected properly from the collar after
striking. Of course there is
always the possibility that they are the
product of games played by the
mint workers at the time, we'll never know.'

do not judge too

I think you have nailed it Fulvio.
Unfortunately no amount of reasoning will work on someone who does not want to accept the truth.

Dunno about that.

His response:

Thanks for that......I will check with more people and may even take
some to our next coin club meeting.

I think he knows the truth and at $200 plus a coin all he is hearing is the money rolling into his account

Most scumbags seem to get upset when caught out.
Since he has not done that and is saying the right sorts of things, it would be nice to give him the benefit of the doubt.
I suppose if he was really checking up on them,  he should stop or not complete the sale?

Like the analytical thinking. If this skill set isn't included in our education curriculum, it should be. I remember doing this stuff in my trade course years ago, and without trying to be a big note, I thought it was sooooo common sense.
As we age we lose three things, one is our memory and arrrrr I've forgotten the other two!

You got it right there Oz if he had concerns he would have stopped sales , con men talk and talk but at end of day still rip you off .

Guess I got lucky that this WAS part of the curriculum. So was all sorts of useful stuff, like accounting, economics, and some outdated skills, like how to write letters and cheques... ;)

And we're far too quick to tar, feather, hang, draw and quarter suspects around here.

Believe it or not, true scumbags are actually relatively few and far between. Even on ebay.

Well, judging by the dealers I know... lets be diplomatic and say they're far from masters of the error.

I could easily see a situation where some bloke walks into the shop with one of these, sells it, and they flip it on ebay at a healthy profit. When the guy comes back with ten more, they'd buy them, for sure.

If he isn't a scumbag who made them himself, this could easily have been the story. Remember the 6d I posted a while back, that we determined was crushed? And I have a couple of others which I picked up, after explaining why they weren't real errors. I keep them as examples of what to look out for.

Also, keep in mind a discussion we had about apprentices making these sorts of thing for a lark, and releasing them into the pond.

You must be looking at a different version of eBay to Me.
The one I use is full of scumbags and traps for the new players and any decent seller/dealer that had and doubts about if an error was genuine or not would not list it until they were certain.
I just hope that the buyer in this case twigs that the coins are "shed jobs" and sends them back for a refund :ok:
