A little off-topic, but still relevant.

When the hail storm hit here last Nov, several pieces of glass in our windows were broken, some of which were small portions of lead light, but none of the lead looks like lead.  It's all very squarish, black and geometrical looking, I guess that matches the geometrical style of the lead light.

The repairer removed the entire sections of glass from the windows and took them away for repairs, and temporarily replaced them with clear glass.  He returned them several weeks later.

yeah I am not entirely up on more modern styles, probably plastic resins products by now
but the days of the H shaped lead - where you slide the glass into to sleeve may be gone
a lot of glass work now has staining and the 'lead' is actually ornamental sitting on the top of the glass

I was stopped from doing it by my boss when I got pregnant due to the dangers of working with the lead solder fumes
back then we didn't even wear masks

just found this on wikkie
Artificial leadlight[edit]

"A commercially produced product, often referred to as "stained glass" or "leadlight", is made of single sheets of glass with self-adhesive lead placed on both sides to replicate lead cames, and either a film or stain placed on the surface to replicate coloured glass. This product has wide domestic application and may be mistaken for genuine stained glass or leadlight. Another method now available is the use of coloured resins that are floated onto the glass, with the different colours divided by a line of resin that emulates the lead came which is used in traditional pieces."

Progress report
Have sanded off the old varnish on the carcass and restained the exterior to even out the colour and done the first coat of varnish.
Looking good so far

A lot of sanding to do so the sooner I get stuck into it the sooner I
can put it back together and find a slot for it inside

That ratty old piece of furniture you picked up  is starting to look amazing.
Love what you are achieving here Mate :good:
By the time you have finished this will look like the craftsman that made this in the first place wanted it to look like :yahoo:
You don't get wood like this or the level of craftsmanship in furniture the days.
This will end up a lovely piece .

Thanks mate this is a miniature cabinet with a fold down writing desk on one side and solid silky oak and luckily it's a very straight unit and all the joints are still tight and yes definitely better than chipboard

That is some lovely silky oak you are handling there. Looking forward to seeing it all done!

Took the leadlight door to the only leadlighter in town (who I previously swore to the other half that I wouldn't go back
to after the last debacle) to sort out.Not much to do to fix it up so I hope he's improved in the last five years since I was
there last. The door will be ready tomorrow so might get this thing finished by or during the weekend coming up
