Quote from: 'serial' pid='52961' dateline='1403133870'your taking the pictures at a slight angle?
you should try to be above the coin
bring the light source closer as well

but that is better than the previous one

This coin is the color of Dark chocolate in hand.
When I take a pic  directly above it you can hardly see the details on it.
I had to shoot on an angle to get a decent shot :ok:

Same settings but shot directly above the coin .

Quote from: 'markn' pid='52964' dateline='1403136060'Here's a tough one to image.  It's got lovely toning and you can only get it to "pop" when the coin is tilted.  So I tilt it adjust the focus so that the middle of the medal is in focus and the top and bottom is always slightly out of focus.  Even when I set the F stop to F19 or F22.  I thought at that level the focal plane would be wide enough to get the whole thing in focus.  But no.  Anyone got any suggestions?
The depth of field needs to be increased(Obvious)

Increase the distance lens to coin, you will lose the coin filling
the sensor but the DoF will increase, maybe enough?
From what I have observed with my lens +25mm = .3mm increase DoF.

Yes, I already tried that thinking that it would make a bit of difference (and it did).  There's about 6 inches of travel left that I can try.  Will take another shot a bit later today.

Have attached the Canon 100mm Macro DoF Chart.
Your Tamron should be very close.

Thanks.  If I get the copystand at full extension I would be close to 50cm and a DOF of 12mm or so.  That would be enough.  I'll have to give it a go,

it was a bit quiet so I thought I would have a photo session. note this is my 1st attempt at photographing slabbed coins and the coins are all in 2x2s

That would have to be the longest post I have ever seen :)
The pics are pretty good considering they are slabbed or in 2x2s.

Got an Ott-Lite today after seeing them for under $60 on eBay the other day and seeing good recommendations from other users.

Set the camera's White balance to Auto, and it done the rest.

A little bit overexposed, but I'll work it out.

With your D200 go full manual.
Set Aperture to F11
Shutter to 1/40th
ISO setting 400(Max)
Less would be better but you would need
to reduce shutter speed to compensate.
A 200 ISO setting would have you shooting at 1/20th.

I'll have a look with fresh eyes tomorrow.(It's a scrollar)
Your little Olympus looks pretty competent
but a quick squiz at some of the settings being selected,
the little thing is making some poor decisions.

The point and shoots don't perform all that well
trying to focus through 2X2 Flips (and slabs).
Sacrifice the flip and Photograph the coin.

Thanks Fordprefect,
I tried those settings and they worked well. I could remove the -1.0 adjustment I had set, as I had it in aperture mode on F11 and let it work the shutter speed out itself.
I can probably shoot at 200 ISO as I have the camera on a copy stand.
