Just a shame they are in plastic, the reflections take away from the beauty of the coins.

I selected that ISO 200 , What an amazing difference that made.
I'm actually starting to enjoy taking coin snaps now 

You both need to take the pics on a slight angle to get the camera lens reflection out of the pics.
That should improve the pics too.

Coins from Vending

if you have an SLR and know how to use it, you can take really good pics of coins without the flash if you have even neutral light and simply over expose the shot by 2 stops.

I used sunlight and a Tupperware container as a diffuser :)
Not the best pic in the world but it is a personal best for me on a Canberra florin .
I'll have another play around with the camera  tomorrow.

An OTT light can be a good first buy as a light to take coin images with.  And lots of times your missus will have one if she sews or does some sort of crafty hobby.  You could just nick...errr borrow it.

Very handy light when nothing else seems to work.
Our Robbiegirl has been using one for ages and
achieves some great shots using it.

The coin below is a nice soft satin Unc that just would
not photograph for me under my usuall LED setup.
