I'm really curious to know how the backwards 2 got there? Guess I will wait until a few others have taken a look

Fr45h3R

I can't see anything unusual on the coin itself.
It's probably just a small bag mark.

Maybe point out where and i'll check it again ?

I have 6 in various grades and checked them all

my hubby bought a 1938 crown at an auction years ago - nice unc
when we showed it to our coin dealer - after having a look over with the magnifier - he promptly showed us the tiny tiny engraved initials near the IND on the obverse
he said it was fairly common on the old coins for the owners to ''mark'' them with initials and he knows to have a look for that esp on scarcer coins

I wonder if it was so the owner of the coin had his or her initials as a part of history or something like that..

Say everyone, check out this ebay listing for a 1955 halfpenny with die crack through Y and a backwards 2 for $1000 :mafia:

just kidding,
to me it looks like a bag mark, least possible scenario, possibly a strike through.

Fr45h3R

Hi all,
One of my latest purchases.
1951Y Halfpenny with type 5 obv.

robbiegal

very nice

my guess

ms64 rb or did they slug it with brown??
could almost be a tad better than 64 (me thinks)

Fr45h3R

Thanks Robbie.
MS64RB on this one.
I would have split it between a high 63 - low 64, it probably made 64 because of the great lustre and clean fields.
Has rainbow toning as well, hard to capture in the image,  but the reverse is really attractive in the hand.

robbiegal

well it is a lovely coin and yes, the lustre is very evident
the aussie halfp is a buggar of a coin to get in great condition, so well done!! and it's a bonus being an obv 5

Goldseeker

Why rate the coin so high.   Brown spots all over it and the Obverse with what appears to be scuff marks.  (Tears from the eyes and around the ears).

Could someone please explain.

Although I am a "coin collector", I am not a professional.   Just an everyday bloke with a passion.   Grading I failed at school.   Hoarding I passed with flying colours.

Hi Goldseeker,
Many years of the KGVI half pennies, especially the Perth minted coins have a poor strike on the obverse which can look like wear / scuffing. The tears and around the ears is just the way the metal flowed when the coin was struck. The lustre goes over these points when you rotate the coin, but it can be tough with the KGVI obverse.

The spots on 1951Y half pennies are not uncommon. Spots and streaks normally, but the streaks can look quite striking.
