Hi Kel the last photo is the best but still slightly out of focus.Your camera
might be too close to the coin
It\'s not about who you know it\'s about what you know

Hi Keldaw,
I've just had a look at the camera you have, i'll try to help. It might be hard to get a real close up, because the 3MP or so won't give you much room to crop but we can try.
Based on another thread, you have a kodak easy share cx7330 camera. I'm not sure what others have indicated, but I hope they don't mind if i repeat anything. Feel free to message me if you want any more help or if something doesn't make sense.

First thing you want to do is find the 'Close Up' setting - You can select this with the dial on top of the camera that you use to turn it on, turn it to the flower. This will allow the camera to focus at around 13 - 70 cm from the coin at wide setting (far) , or 22 - 70cm in telephoto setting (close)
Best to turn off the flash too, as it may cause a shiny coin to be blown out (over exposed) from the reflection.
This is where the photo has 'bright white' where no detail is shown, where you will find even by adjusting the brightness after you have imported the photo to windows you will see no detail.

If you have a small bedside lamp, use this instead to add light to the coin (maybe a 60w lamp or so ?)
From here, the most important part is having the camera stable. The camera you have, because your turning the flash off you can rest it on the raised surface pretty much right up to the lens.

Here is a photo of the kind of setup i'm describing (I normally use a D-SLR but i tried with this compact camera to make sure it was possible)
[attachment=1207]

For 'UNC' coins with lustre, it will help to move the light around so the lustre is still showing, but not heavily reflecting. Normally my D-SLR can handle this as it has sensors for it, but for a compact it's harder (your camera does have a setting to adjust the exposure but as i'm not familiar with it I won't try to adjust that, best to make sure it is at 0 though )
Then, rest the camera on your make shift stand, zoom in / out as close as the camera can focus (half button press) and then take the photo! :)

Here is a couple I took with the setup above. When I imported into windows, I opened the folder, right clicked on the photo and selected EDIT , this should open Windows Photo Gallery, let me know about this step, because in this program (which should be standard in windows vista), you can "auto adjust" which will fix up the colours a bit, and crop the photo too.

No lustre

One with lustre, I moved the light around a bit so it didn't have too much 'reflective white' areas.

As the camera is only 3mp, that would be the reason you can't get them bigger without starting to go grainy so its not related to the photo you have taken. They look really good. You've improved the exposure of the shots as you've added more photos to this thread (no more blown highlights) and they're quite sharp too!!
Well done!
The orange shots looks like the camera struggled with the white balance, from what I could tell that model didn't have the option to change the setting, but the best thing with digital cameras is you can take a few shots and pick the best one.

I should mention even my small camera is fairly new so its about 10mp or more , with that many pixels you can afford to crop heavily.
I can't wait to pick up a macro lens for my DSLR, which will be able to fill the entire shot with the coin, so no cropping is required.

I think you've clicked on something accidently. Click the red "close tags", delete that text and start again. Does that work for you?

thanks rob , i think i can now come to that conclusion too,
new camera needed , this one is a few years old now , but still working very good on other pictures  , like when we go on holidays , and at party,s and weddings , and things like that, we bought this camera at peter,s camera house with the dopper and leads for
$ 499.00  and then we had to buy the blank paper to put in the dopper at $ 40.00 per 40 sheets = $ 1.00 per picture . too dear i think and that was back then , so we did not have to go to town to get the pic , but it became to dear and harvey was doing them at about .18 cents ea , so we started to do that . then i saw the same camera , same model an all the extras for around $ 280.00 ea on the ebay ..
so my question now is ?? where to get a new camera ?? what brand and what model ?? and what about the MP,s  ,  is it the  more  mp,s  the better pic can be taken and up close will be easier for me .. this is what i have to find out .. i am not into camera,s in a big way , so i dont want to spend big dollars and buy anything like you mention like DSLR  or something like that , i dont even know what DSLR  means but i would think it would be a very expenceive sort of camera ..
                                 ,, kel ,,

now the sun is shining again , i will go outside and try again to get a clear shot , and then try tinypic again , .
tinypic , so far seams to be the easiest for me to understand , but i still have trouble taking a good clear , sharp , pic with it and no idea how to enlarge it , so maybe with a new camera i will be able to enjoy my hobby  a bit better ,..   ,, kel ,,

keep watching for the next episode in this continuing saga  ..

same channel , each day . now i have my wife stepping in to help me out also ..  :yahoo::yahoo:  ,, kel ,,

this is using tinypic.   ,, kel ,,

[attachment=1216][attachment=1215][attachment=1217][attachment=1218]

from tinypic , i cannot enlarge them the first 4
double click and nothing happens .

this is taking them straight from my pictures. the last 4.
double click and they will enlarge .. but only to the same size as tinypic . so really no difference ,..

so i think to get bigger , and better pic , i need a new camera with more MP,S    ,, kel ,,
thanks for all your help ..      ,, kel ,,

Hi Keldaw,
Quotewhere to get a new camera ??
Online seems to be the way to go. You don't have to spend $100's of dollars these days. Harvey norman / JB hifi can do good deals too if you want to see in hand before purchasing.
Quotewhat brand and what model ??
There are so many out there. Panasonic seem to have a few in the lower price bracket. Choose something with image stabilisation, it can help remove blur when you are taking photos hand held. Look for Optical Zoom (not digital zoom) of around 4x or 5x. Digital zoom is not of concern so don't be fussed about this.
Quoteand what about the MP,s , is it the more mp,s the better pic can be taken and up close will be easier for me ..
The MPs refers to the size the image is, it won't impact the quality.
An uncropped image from a 3mp camera will print on a 5 x 7 (inches) photo and not lose quality but if you start going to 8x10, it will start to look fuzzy if you look close up.
In comparison, an image from a 16mp can be printed on 11x14 with no loss of quality. This is around the same size as four 3mp images, layed out 2 high by 2 wide.
Where say a 14mp or 16mp will help you, is that when you crop the photo, you are still left with enough detail to not look fuzzy or blurry.
Harvey normal have a 16mp with a 3in screen on the back available for $118 http://www.harveynorman.com.au/panasonic-lumix-dmc-fh8-digital-camera.html

DSLR is a Digital SLR, they can get very expensive and this is what the professionals use. There are a few entry level ones available, but they still start around the $400/$500 mark I think. They give you the ability to change lenses depending on the situation, but good lenses cost more than the camera sometimes.

Kel, this is taken with a Nikon D3200 that I purchased last year. Was shot hand held with two lights obove the coin. Resized to 600x600 before uploading to photobucket and then to this forum.
Try Cameras Direct on the Gold Coast- the macro lens I am waiting for was $200 cheaper than Adelaide retail.! They can be found online.!
