*The marketing call you make when you are not making a marketing call.

Just had a call from Telstra NBN division on my business number. Wondered who would be calling me from area 08 before I answered.
Chap introduced himself and stated that as I had opted out from receiving marketing calls this was not a marketing call. Just calling to discuss the NBN with me and make sure I knew what it was all about and what options I have.

{As we have just had NBN access for about six weeks as good a course of action for the moment is to do nothing}
The way he was talking implied I would need to make a decision on changing soon.

He couldn't/wouldn't tell me what the basis was for me being on his call list. When I asked him why I needed to talk to him about internet service and/or options he said the call was not about the internet. He seemed stumped when I stated that NBN is the internet infrastructure provider for Australia and Telstra is just one of many end service providers to the users; therefore discussing the NBN without reference to the internet didn't seem to make sense.

I was enjoying myself contradicting him but had some other things to do so I suggested he upgrade my status from "do not make marketing calls" to "do not call" and bid him goodbye.

I will charitably assume the call was made purely from the goodness of Telstra's heart as part of their campaign to ensure customers are fully informed without specifically pushing Telstra's mores. But I do not believe that.

Anyone else had a similar call?

Ditto. We've got Optus cable, which is not up to spec, so we'll end up with this stupid FTTdp BS, where you end up powering their gear, and legally make yourself a mini-power company. But it won't be for many years yet... we're not even on the radar yet, so it'll be in the 20's sometime. Maybe.

:laugh2: ..... love it Jeff, I get too peeved off with those sort of calls too quickly and just hang up, I wish I had your patience.

I've had several lately saying they are from the "technical department" at Telstra ....... odd eh ...... I'm on a satellite NBN connection that is not Telstra related at all. (The background chatter of the call suggests an OS phishing centre).

Here in Woopi the NBN was due in the first half of this year, now it's been pushed back to the second half of next year. Part of the town has fixed wireless which covers a huge area inland (to the west) where (almost) no-one lives. Meanwhile, the old ADSL network gets no upkeep and falls into disrepair.

Ours was only 20 months later than the original announced date.

Another "not a..." call today. Caller ID showed it as a call from not far from here and caller (heavy Indian accent) identified himself as being from the Australian Government with a mission to inform about the generous solar installation subsidies. His spiel included mentioning (repeatedly) that it was not a sales call.

When I could get a word in edgewise I firmly stated I was not interested and he continued with the pitch, undaunted. I then said "STOP! DIDN'T YOU LISTEN. I SAID I AM NOT INTERESTED." and hung up.

Checked the caller ID number on a reverse lookup and it is a genuine, private number in a nearby town. Wherever he was calling from would not be there (probably not even in Australia). We are on the Do Not Call Register but that doesn't stop this sort of nonsense.

The insistence of these callers reminds me of a well known Shakespeare quotation, "The lady doth protest too much, methinks"

Yes the "do not call register" is a load of crap and doesn't work. I just tell them, very politely to F#$@ off :)

You have me stumped AJ. I have thought about it and can't think of any polite way to tell someone to eff off! It is an inherently very impolite instruction.
