$600 worth of $2 coins.

This is what I found:
4x 2011 Elder
3x 2012 Remembrance (Poppy)
1x 2015 ANZAC (Red)
1x 2015 Remembrance (Orange)
1x 2016 Elder
1x 2016 Olympics (Yellow)

Here's yesterday's $600 haul for comparison:
1x 2012 Elder
1x 2012 Remembrance (Poppy)
1x 2015 Remembrance (Orange)
2x 2016 Olympics (Green)

Thus, over the last two days (or $1200), I've found:
4x 2011 Elder
1x 2012 Elder
4x 2012 Remembrance (Poppy)
1x 2015 ANZAC (Red)
2x 2015 Remembrance (Orange)
1x 2016 Elder
1x 2016 Olympics (Yellow)
2x 2016 Olympics (Green)

How does this compare with other people's strike rates?  :yahoo:

TBH, a pointless question, because these things are really random. You may as well ask about wavy 2's or NCLT or foreign coins.

The coloured coins are things the average punter stashes away. The low mintages are likely not evenly distributed. Both may turn up in numbers in location A and not at all in location B.

I pulled two wavy 2's out of one sack a few years ago. Doesn't mean I'll ever see another one. ;)

It's really not that random. I get my rolls straight from Armaguard, which has a central processing facility in the middle of Brisbane. Coins from all over south-east Queensland get sent there, mixed up, and redistributed. This means that although there are fluctuations from roll to roll, it all balances out over the long run. Any coin circulating within several hundred kilometres of where I live has an equal chance of ending up in one of these rolls and being noodled by me.

Based on my own statistics kept over the last six months, the orange Remembrance Day $2 coin is no more difficult to find in Brisbane than a 1997 10c, and the red ANZAC Day $2 coin is no more difficult to find than a 1972 5c. You can argue all you want with me, but that doesn't change the fact that coloured $2 coins are much more abundant in Brisbane than wavies, incuses, mules, NCLT, and foreign coins (other than NZ).

This is what I've noodled so far out of 264 rolls (worth $13,200):

1x Coronation (purple)
2x Remembrance (green)
3x ANZAC (red)
10x Remembrance (orange)
1x Olympics (black)
1x Olympics (yellow)
2x Olympics (green)

That's 20 coloured coins in total, half of which were orange. Clearly, the orange coin doesn't just appear randomly. It is almost guaranteed to turn up in $3000 worth of $2 coins. I reckon I'll obtain a similar result for the other coloured coins if I keep noodling. :D

The Basset

Was the 2016 Elder a normal obverse or the cameo one?

Sorry, I meant the normal obverse. When I found this coin, the obverse was facing up, so I saved it right until the very end because I thought it would have colour on it. Then, when I turned it over, I was bitterly disappointed, but since it's only the second one of these I've found to date, I got over the disappointment fairly quickly. ;)

Maybe you were luckier than you think.  The RAM lists only the cameo obverse for circulation with the standard big head only made
for the birth set.  They have been wrong before.  What the RAM says is both varieties being circulated in 5,10,20 and 50 but only the cameo in $1 and $2.  All too hard.

jens coins

The standard 2016 $2 elder has been in circulation for a while.
I managed to get a heap from Aldi from Prosegur rolls.
They may be low mintage as there is a heap of $2 circulating coins this year.

Chances are, the mint simply hasn't updated their website. I'd rather wait for the annual report(s) before jumping to conclusions. However, my gut feeling is that these coins are going to be very common, considering that they felt the need to send them to Brisbane when most other new 2016 coins have gone straight to other states. What we're seeing here is really just the tip of the iceberg. :winkextra:

Absolutely! If there's one thing I've learnt from putting together the PDF's, its that you can't trust ANY information or assumptions until the ink is dry on official documentation. And even then its often incomplete or just plain wrong.

Pretty pathetic, really. :(

I noticed in your PDF that you were unsure what the final mintage of the 2001 $2 coin was. I think it's beyond doubt that the annual report is wrong, and that they were out by one decimal place, just like with the 2014 MoR $1 coin in last year's annual report. Nevertheless, I do think the annual reports are more accurate than the website itself, because the people who put the information on the website sometimes forget that a coin can be minted outside the year it is dated.

I leave it in doubt whenever there are two conflicting numbers, because otherwise I'd be as bad as the others, and have a 50% chance of being wrong. No other option when the source data is tainted. :(

I use noodling to determine which figure is correct.

This is what I've found so far:

1998 - 44 (Mintage: 8.7 million)
1999 - 244 (Mintage: 27.3 million)
2000 - 33 (Mintage: 5.7 million)
2001 - 288 (Mintage: ???)
2002 - 232 (Mintage: 29.7 million)
2003 - 97 (Mintage: 13.7 million)
2004 - 141 (Mintage: 20.0 million)

To fill in the unknown figure, I make comparisons. If the mintage of the 2001 $2 coin really was 3.565 million, it ought to be scarcer than 1998 and 2000, and much scarcer than 1999, 2002, 2003 and 2004.

However, that's not what the data shows. It's actually much more common than all of these years, including 1999 and 2002, which had mintages almost 10 times higher than that.

Conversely, if you assume the mintage was 35.6 million, then it ought to be much more common than any of the surrounding years, and that's exactly what my data shows. Hence, it must be the correct figure.

Today I noodled $200 worth of $2 coins:
1 x 2011 Elder
1 x 2012 Remembrance (no colour)
2 x 2016 Olympic (Red)
1 x 2016 Olympic (Black)
2 x 2016 Olympic (Yellow)
3 x 2016 Paralympic

You did very well, Noel, with all those coloured coins. Congratulations! :wavemulticolor:

The Data will be Flawed if the samples are only taken from one City  or even State.
It all depends on where and when the coins are distributed , It is a very rare thing that the new coinage is distributed evenly across Australia :ok:
