This is cos Goldy just told me on the phone that he doesn't believe this is  an error. He reckons its just a light strike. :dodgy:

I initially thought it to be a weak strike also McDuck, but have a couple of variations of the same type of error.

The first only impacts the third roo's leg with all other details appearing fully struck.

The second has the same but also with one missing rear leg on the second roo and missing detail on the underside of the fourth roo.

The third is similar to the second but the upper part of the second roo's leg fully struck but with a faint foot and missing detail on the underside of the fourth roo.

I've had heaps of people tell me it's just a weak strike but haven't believed them. I've been putting them aside whenever they come up in a noodle - got about 20 or so so far with absolutely no third leg (not just a faint version).

Uni, never looked past the second Roo, so have to see if any other legs are missing!

How long does it normally take for an error/variety to be widely recognized?

You're spot on with there being some just visible versions Tooloot and some where there is no sign of a leg whatsoever. (Note: My 3 pics were just 3 I had on file, pretty sure I could find some better examples in my 2015 error bag if I looked hard enough ...... but then I'd have to take 100 pics of each before I had a photo I was happy with :laugh2:)

McDucks scope pics definately belong to the no sign of a leg whatsoever version.

IMO, its two different errors. The weak strike affects other areas of the coin, yes.

The fully-struck one is almost certainly a fill. Same as missing letters on various obverses, and should be worth similar amounts.

Oh, also worth mentioning, there are a number of early indicators for cracks on both sides of this coin. A backpack, lizard-tongue and spew roo may come out of them, as well as a lump on Liz's nose and back of her hair, and cracks from the tip of her nose and from the front corner of her neck to the rim. None of which are significant enough on this example, but worth keeping an eye out for.

Ah, how long is a bit of string?

It depends. On how significant the error is, who finds it, and when, and how they report it. A prominent author in CAB definitely has more pull than any of us in here, that's for sure.

Top images RG :good:
Other than the missing leg that coin looks to be struck rather well.

i reckon it is an engraving fault right back at the die making stage
the surfaces are far too neat for die fill IMO as humble as it is

Great photos RG!

Your's also has part of the inner hind leg missing on the 2nd roo too, but it starts to form properly just before the 4th roo's ear and then in fully struck to the end of the legs after that.

Yeah, but notice it has the same errors as mine. The backpack forming on R1, the crack on R2's back that develops into a spew roo, and the crack on lizzie's nose.

I'm sticking with the fill story because of this. If/when I see one without these errors, or with them fully developed, then I'll accept the die variety theory.

So mine has another variation of the error
very interesting
it begs the question - if it was die fill then why would my coin have such a clearly definitive start to the inner hind  leg of roo number two
it just seems too clear to suddenly start
i thought die fill was always a bit rough and blotchy with unclear edges etc?

anyways my little baby stays with us and i have alerted others in the family who go shopping to be on the look out for them!!

and of course a big thank-you to the person who donated the coin for the 500 members grand prize/giveaway!!  a real little treasure  xxx
