Quote from: 'r9453' pid='94857' dateline='1471460870'I got this from the Mostyn Byrnes book who credits it as Derek Foster 1922 Six Pence "Roo with Antlers" Foster Ref. No. S1:

Perhaps that's where i saw it although that looks like a drawing or a 'rubbing',it may be a one off error although Foster lists it in his booklet. The 3d photo is on the back cover.

I'll throw these Pics. up while i have them out,you can see why some 'éxperts' at the time were puzzled, one Author in the early 1960's nicknamed this Coin the 'blob' variety, although this eg. is neat compared to some, and claimed that the 'dot' was added post mint as can be seen with the moat/depression around many egs. .There has to story behind the minting of this Coin,Numismatists put their reputation on the line at the time, these weren't fly-by-night self appointed experts hopping onto the gravy train as we moved to Decimal Currency but Collectors/Dealers that have been in the industry all their lives. Some were alive and involved in Collecting/Dealing when the Coin was minted in 1919(or early 1920) and had never seen one until the early 1960's,very strange.
If anyone has some Info. from Coin books or Magazines on the 1919 Double Dot i would be pleased if you posted here as most of the Info. in the folder i've been given is generalised and  unsubstantiated.

I've had a look at the few books I have Basil and there's been a lot more info mentioned here than what any of them cover.

Yeah AJ,very little Info. available these days, the drama over them only lasted for a few years, possibly 1960 to 1966,by the time we changed to Decimal Currency it was Business as usual with it accepted as a legitimate variety as more & more turned up.
It looks like Neal is doing a bit of research so it will be interesting to see what he comes up with.

RG,i have a few beers aboard but your Coin looks like the "false 1919 DD" variety, the lower dot is always in the same place but the Top 'dot' can be in several places.
All genuine 1919 have the bar/disturbance over the 'Á'  of Australia and a die chip on the 'O' of 'ÓF'.I circled them in the first photo of my 'blob' post.

Peter Andrews told me that my coin was a die chip variety
which I think is very cool

Taken from rennik's 13th Ed (I think around 1980). Not a good book for coins but gee does it have a hell of a lot of tokens and info on them.

Taken from 3rd Ed rennik's

I have a couple of other books and mags to look at but I think that's about it, yeah pretty sad :(

Ok,i'm sober this morning,he was probably talking about a dot under Coin variety as its not a DD.At first glance the lower dot is the give away,on a genuine 1919 DD its higher and slightly to the left than the dot under, also all genuine 1919 DD have the bar over A and the die chip on the 'O' so only one Reverse die was used to strike them but how they got squares and blobs over the top scroll is anyone's guess.

Thanks AJ for making the effort.

Yeah, that's what known as the "false DD" variety, that top dot is a die chip of some kind, heaps of them around in the late 1960's and 1970's and a regular on Ebay these days.
Robbie's coin is on the left, you can see the position of the lower dot on the genuine DD is different, its positioned higher and too the left.As previously mentioned all genuine DD have the bar over A and the die chip on the O.
