I have a heat sealer but I don't own any staple type 2x2's So I and pretty interested to see if the heat sealer idea is effective.
Does anyone have a heat sealer and the 2x2's to try this ?

I have a heat sealer
but it just does a straight thin line
I think you need something with a fair thickness to get it done evenly

JeffH

That's a start. The edges of a 2x2 are defined by four straight thin lines.
Thinking is dangerous, it makes you think. That\'s why many people avoid it.

That's all you would need. Just apply it to 3 sides as the 4th side is sealed anyway.
Like Jeff said though, scorching could be the problem.

I just use the side of the iron at its widest. More mass means more heat and less time. I do two sides, rotate the 2x2 and do the other two, with a little swipe across the 'overlaps' for good measure. Takes maybe 20 seconds.

Quote from: 'Triggersmob' pid='90528' dateline='1465774875'I wonder if one of those heat sealer thingys would put out enough heat to seal a 2x2.

Nope. They're electronically controlled pulse sealers and won't stay on long enough to heat through cardboard. I can't even do multiple layers of plastics with mine. :(

for sure !!!!

EH? Was it not obvious from the outset that you must use layers of fabric top and bottom? When I first posted this, I believe I had pics of a calico bank bag with the 2x2 inside.

You most definitely do NOT want to touch the cardboard with the iron. It will burn. I think I posted a pic of my yellowed first attempt which I baked for too long under too much pressure. ;)

You probably don't want to be just out on the edges. Two inches is a lot of play area for a coin to escape the window. Bad enough that they do that with the adhesive ones. :(

Quote from: 'JeffH' pid='90532' dateline='1465776509'What is needed is a press with a heated, 2" square (hollow), narrow rimmed top and a locating bottom guide.

Absolutely! This was my first idea, but have you looked at the prices they charge for dies??? And then you have to hold it.. and keep it away from non-heat-resistant fingers. ;)

QuoteMy questions would be;
•How much hotter than 254ºC would the tool need to be to penetrate to the film?
•How long will it need? Bearing in mind different brands of holders have different thicknesses (and possibly materials).
•How much heat and time before the paper facing starts to scorch?

Don't have the BoPET specs handy, but IIRC, the window is about 100° before it boils and self destructs. Plenty of room! I'd go half way, say a tad under 300°, to reduce the time without great danger of overheating. Might want to check the specs on the cardboard though, as I have burnt one before. ;)

20 seconds or so, from memory. I didn't time it.. probably should next time, eh?

A bit longer than necessary (yeah, this is like "how long's a bit of string" :dodgy:)

FWIW, my first effort, the scorched one, I applied way too much pressure, and actually creased the mount as well as scorching it. You really want to keep the iron moving a little so as to spread the heat. Its more art than science though. ;)
