Hi

I have this 1966 proof case in good condition. i would like to keep it that way,can anyone recommend the best way to store and care for it.
It is starting to feel slightly sticky and i don't want it to start deteriorating any more

trout

Give it a gentle clean with a damp soapy cloth then rinse using a damp cloth with no soap then dry and put into a ziplock bag should do the trick :ok:

Yeah, mine are starting to deteriorate as well, there are pictures in the other Thread of the one i was given to sell, fell apart due to moisture and was attacked by Bacteria/Mould.I have mine in anti-bacterial bags and then placed in a ziplock.Interesting to see if they continue to decline.

Yes you got it that' what i want to stop from happening:beg:

I'm wondering if a LARGE Zip Lock Bag would work on someone who died. It would save on expensive coffins and casket bearers would have a much easier time carrying the deceased to the grave site.

JeffH

Rate of deterioration, after a few days anyway, is not an issue there.
Thinking is dangerous, it makes you think. That\'s why many people avoid it.

there is a lot of funerals in Australia every day , so there must be a lot of workers making coffins all around Australia every day , so do you realize that a lot of workers would lose their jobs if zipper bags were used .
I don't think of this very often , as I am heading down that path already and , I can tell you it's gets scary . thinking about it ..
take care because we care ..

I only have a couple of these boxes but I store mine in cellophane Cello (Polypropylene) bags and then in plastic bins (which are food grade bins)

I buy mine off this seller on ebay

I just store mine in a filing cabinet along with all my other numismatic odds and sods without any dramas.
It is hot and dry here for about 9 months and cold and dry for a couple more, it doesn't rain here that often :cray:

Thanks Robbiegal

I took Trouts advice and washed with soapy water then wiped down with a damp cloth. It still felt slightly sticky so i let it dry completely then wrapped in acid free tissue paper and i then put it a bag and vacuum sealed it. I have to be careful as the humidity in Darwin takes its toll on things like the case.
Those bags from Ebay look good if you don't have a vacuum sealer.
I will open it up again in a couple of months and if it is ok i will redo it again.
:good:

If the case is still a bit sticky then the tissue paper is not a good idea.
It will eventually stick and be a real problem to remove.
I suspect that the outer "Leather like" coating on these cases is made of a pvc type plastic and yours may be starting do what pvc does best and is melting slowly.
The humidity (Especially during the build up) would not be helping this one iota .

Yes i understand what your saying , there must be something i can seal it with to stop it happening .

Yeah,i purchased a couple of sets a few years back, sight unseen, from a USA seller i had bought coins off in the past. They had been wrapped in newspaper and he forgot to tell it was stuck to the surface of the boxes, when removed it took bits of the box coating with it.Coins OK but i had to buy two new boxes.
I think the blue dye(& possibly the glue) in the covering is organic as the mould/bacteria seem to attack it when conditions are favourable
