Maybe try some of those little moister bag you get in shoe boxes as well might help when you store it next, just a thought :winkextra:

These boxes are rather nice and they do make the coins look pretty "Flash", But as a storage for proof coins they are totally inadequate .
I would think that when the plastic or whatever the outer layer on the box starts to rot/degrade there isn't much that can be done unless the chemical reaction can be halted or stabilised in some way.

I would store any coins stuff in a refrigerated air-conditioned room
or at least have heaps of those moisture absorbent thingees in the cupboard with the coins

with respect to the 1966 proof set box
it does sound as if maybe it has done it's time and the deterioration has started to set in

once those plastics  go - that is pretty well it I am afraid

I never vacuum seal any of my coin stuff
my dealer says coins should breathe a bit
but I do have some pcgs coins & they are sealed
