serial

It is faintly marked as 9ct gold and is old rose gold.
I got it in a bulk lot on the weekend and cannot figure it out but figured some of the older members might know.

yes, done that now, but it has left me none the wiser as to what I have, I do know that mary was a spinster widow who died family less and that comet vale (location 29.942°S 121.126°E)was a small gold mine town near Coolgardie that no longer exist (explains what I go a 2.1 gram gold nugget in the lot) but I really want to know what this is!!! :(

Coiny Chris

Hello,

I am old...... For someone who knows everything you will need a 20 YO Uni student though. Anyway... It may be as simple as a paperweight, or a wax seal that was never finished. Many people put interesting things on their desks, like a strange shaped rock from a holiday. It may be  a random item that has been engraved rather than " something " as such. An ore sample given by a lover ? In the end you may have to " decide " what it is yourself.

I reckon Nevol's on the money .......

The only thing I could come up with was that it was McNamara's ... Band

Coiny Chris

Hello,

I think Nevol would be either right / or the best so far. I didnt see it was hollow.

Comet Vale sounds like a Horses name.
It could be something to do with the racing scene or a bridal adornment for a horse ??
Comet Vale is also the name of a Gold Mine :ok:

Yeh I think scarf ring is the best guess so far, the owner of this was quite active locally and bought some very expensive properties/mining rights but never married after her sweet heart appears to have not returned from the war. Sad really

I will try to use it with a scarf soon

Coiny Chris

Hello,

You may have a very nice piece of history. Dont know what it is worth in Dollars, but it would be a good fit in a local museum. From the area of course.

Given that Comet Vale is long gone, the closest candidate would be Kalgoorlie. Do they even HAVE a museum that might be interested/knowledgeable?

I would suggest that serial might be more interested in the gold re-sale value than giving this to a museum

Who said anything about giving?

If there was a suitable museum, they'd be an obvious port of call for identification, and some evaluation of whether it was significant, or just a lump of scrap gold.

I have been to too many auctions and tender sales of items previously donated to museums. So now i will not give any item to a museum to display when they are just as likely to sell it. When I donate to a museum I give them cash.
However if I considered this just a lump of gold it would already be in my scrap bucket. I like the item and will be keeping it for my personal collection of weird things I have acquired. I just want to know what it is so when I show people I can tell them what it is.

interesting - your point bout museum sales
even the RAM sells off stuff

nothing lasts for long I suppose
even when we think it is safely put aside for history's sake .. pity

it is a charming lump of gold indeed
