Quote from: 'JeffH' pid='98762' dateline='1474795022'I agree. I have just sorted about 3kg of 10¢ coins, collected from change in the past months and not one 2011 to be found.

I came across my first one last night in my change at the wet mess of a mine site in the Meekatharra area. :yahoo:
I did get some weird looks when I got excited about my find though

My strike rate for the 2011 10c is about one in every 6.36kg (or one in every 1136 coins). I've noodled 8 so far, which makes it only slightly more difficult to find than the 1991 10c. The one that really gives me nightmares is the 1985 10c. I've noodled over 50kg of 10c coins so far, and only found one of them, so I wish you the best of luck in trying to find one of those in your change. It makes finding the 2011 one look like child's play. :winkextra:

I think I've only found a two or three 1985s in the 16+ years I've been looking at my change - each fairly circulated too from memory.

From someone who rarely checks his change or has little inclination to noodle for coins, and at the risk of stating the obvious, the attraction of chasing down these scarcer coins must be the challenge as well as only wanting to pay face for them? Not trying to be a smarty as I do understand these are logical reasons for the activity, but from my angle these coins are also out there in Mint Sets?

Hercules

Pretty much. I started collecting coins when I was a kid, but I didn't know anything about mint sets, so I tried to get every coin I could from change. I also did a bit of noodling to fill in some of the gaps in my collection, my parents got sick of it, so I just sat around and waited for them to arrive in change.

As I got older, I became more aware of the mint sets, but I was turned off by the high price tag, the fact that they do not include all circulating coins for any given year, and the fact that they often include non-circulating commemorative coins. These last two problems totally defeat the purpose of having the mint sets, which is why I still prefer to get my coins through other means.

On top of all this, there isn't really anything "fun" about buying a mint set. I enjoy the thrill of finding coins that are really scare in circulation, because it gives me a sense of accomplishment. How often have you found an incuse flag 50c, a wavy baseline 20c, or a $1/10c mule in a mint set?

I received one of those mules in change once, and I'm awfully glad that I didn't spend it, because it's such a good example of the mint "stuffing up". Considering that you rarely check your change, how can you be sure that you haven't thrown a mule back into the pond, and forfeited the $500+ you would have made from selling it to another collector?

I Get where you are coming from Hercules and I imagine that you would get a great sense of satisfaction and achievement finding ALL your coins from the Wild.
Some of us however are not as patient as other collectors and go the Mint set route.
Each to their own and I have to admire your commitment and tenacity Mate :good:

:i_agree: totally. I did say I rarely check change which wasn't quite correct as these days I do often look for the standouts like the mule and the wavy etc. But as trout said, some of us are impatient, so the mint sets become an easy source for most of the circulation coins. But yeah, I do get achievement and challenge aspect of noodling for the scarcer dates etc. :good:

One day, I probably will get the mint sets, just to fill in all the MSO years. I think it's a bit perverse that there are so many years when particular denominations weren't circulated. :)

JeffH

Of course MSO years do occasionally turn up with noodling so all is not lost.
Thinking is dangerous, it makes you think. That\'s why many people avoid it.

Here's the list of NCLT I've noodled:
1952 6d
2015 20c - WWI 1914-1918
2015 20c - WWI Mateship
2010 50c - 150th Running of the Melbourne Cup
1995 $1 - Waltzing Matilda (S)
1991 $2

I could probably get them all eventually, but it will take a LOOOOOOOONG time! ;)

Goldseeker

I only started noodling again on Monday of this week.   Today I found the following:

2016 LARGE Rabbit Ear;   Pictured in the Rabbit Ear thread.

Two cuds on the large roo:-

2 x 1993 Conservation Wave Cuds;
1 x 1994 Rabbit ear;   and
2 x NCLT: "C" Counterstamp Sydney Harbour Bridge, "C" Mint Mark Smithy.

Quite a good haul for today and only 640 x $1 coins noodled.

How many 2016s did you get in total? They're still very sparse up here in Queensland, as is the 2015 ANZAC one.
