Pretty insignificant I know, but I was hard up! :angel:
I've had this one for a while, it has what resembles silver frost in the lower half of the reverse, seen quite a few like it from different years, never bothered to ask about it before as I assumed it was caused by a worn die:

On some 10c coins, can't remember the years, the reverse is nearly 'covered in' with the same stuff.  It almost looks like some sort of residue, but from what?

I can't say I've ever seen it on an obverse.  Why not?

Anyone got any clues as to what it is and is there a technical term for it?

I have quite a few of the 5c 'Paw' Cuds.  They appear both left and right and occasionally both. Some are huge.

Nevol,  I'm more interested in your photo setup.  With the spare time I'm trying to improve my coin photography and the plethora of threads hasn't helped a great deal.  I've got the coppers and predecimals downpat but the more recent dollars and "silver" come out terrible.

I'm starting to think it's impossible to have both contrast and lustre.

The only thing I haven't tried is axial lighting but your full dollar photo's show the coin with just a few hotspots.  You also seem to just be using a single light at 12.00 o'clock so I suspect you're not using axial lighting.  I'm interested in your lighting setup.  It's a bit off topic so PM or other thread (if you haven't already mentioned it elsewhere) would be appreciated.

Hi Steve, I think we all look at photos and say- "How hard can it be to take a decent photo of a coin". I have been trying a plethora of different cameras lately and am still not wrapped with my results.! My plan for the New Year is to get it right.! Perhaps we could all have a base coin ie. 1964 Penny and post results with camera type, lighting etc. and help each other out.!! New decimal coins are a stress whereas pre decimal dulled surfaces are easier.! I generally use two lights (10 o'clock and 2 o'clock) but I think the secret is in the editing.! Shared knowledge is good knowledge.! Hopefully by this time next year we are all experts.!

Just noodled this 2012 50c with Rev Cuds.

50c 2012 rev. The Green & Red arrows indicate actual cuds, the Blue & Red ones are only like outlines of cuds, or flat patches of metal.  They show up better in the close ups that follow.
