I think it would have been far better if you just to kept this to yourself Serial, You must have expected some negative comments from members here

Personally I'm glad Serial found it and posted about it, gives us all hope.
(Still in awe).

trout

I can't help thinking that whoever owned that sov previously would not have spent it in error.
It is more likely that some kid has knocked it off to buy lollies with :ok:

Yes something like that I'd imagine Trout. I thought perhaps someone going through someone who had passed away's things and just didn't know any better than to treat it as a dollar and simply spent it.

A lot of people don't have an interest or a memory of past things, even yesterday I think it was, one of the questions on "The Chase" was what main colour was the $2 note ....... the contestant eventually answered purple.

I see that people can take this story how they want, personally I see it as motivation to continue searching my change and looking into tills whenever I am at the shops despite the weird looks I get from people and elbows in the gut from  the wife to stop being so weird. fact is, the sovereign is my reward for having the knowledge to recognise what it is from 1 metre away in a bunch of junk world coins, I (like others here) go through thousands of coins weekly (until I had bub :) ) looking for that 1 in a 1000 coin. This means I have a unique skill set and can spot key dates/variants from a distance in piles of coins. I worked hard for this skill and finding what I do when I do is proof that it is worth it.
Coin collectors as a whole are type casted and generally locked down upon by sporting/social types. as far as I am concerned I will not spend my time or knowledge helping those who have no interest in numismatics until they can make a quick buck. I genuinely enjoy collecting and can be obsessive in my hobby to the point that I spend hours reading/searching or just talking about coins and when I see the chance to take a coin out of circulation worth more than the traded face value I do so any day
Anyone who says otherwise needs to get of their high horse before they fall and hurt themselves or stop hating on the fact they didn't find it.

Some people earn top dollars and pay top dollars to get a coin with minimal effort
Some people hunt for coins, in banks, coins shows, garage sales, coins shops, ebay etc to get the best coin they can for the best price

Both are collectors, they just go about it differently

I wish people would accept this as I have ceased posting many of my recent finds because of the hate poured on by some at how little I have paid for them. they conveniently forget that I have boxes and boxes of junk coins that I paid for in the hope of finding an elusive coin I can be proud of and show off. Or that I have spent countless hours learning what I know and sorting millions of coins.

Anyone can just go to an auction and buy a collection, mine was earned

robbiegal

well the sovvie is impressive . just check that it is not a jewellery copy if you go to sell (still gold but not mint struck)

but mate I am still awestruck with the gold 50c
I have held a similar one in my hand
and boy oh boy
they are just awesome - I ogle the gold ones that are on display at the mint year after year after year .....

you certainly pull out the goods of the scarcer/rarer coins that is for sure, like you say, you have developed an eye for them
whereas I am a bit 'type' cast and like my pennies, but I have many albums and boxes on non-penny coins, so I think the hobby can get you in many ways!

trout

Not Show stoppers But still nice to find amongst a bulk lot of bullion grade florins :)

Latest finds:

2008 $1 MOR - die crack from edge to top of big kangaroo's ear (plus cud)

2015 $1 MOR - string of cuds under big kangaroo's tail

Couple of 2016 Changeover 50c errors - cud on top of the shield and die cracks under the shield.

We all collect and source the coins in our collections differently But the one thing we do all have in common is we all look for value for money when purchasing a new acquisition.
I personally have bought coins at auction or from eBay at a fraction of their value at times and I certainly don't feel any "Guilt" doing this.
Just because Serial scored a sovereign at a bargain basement price doesn't give anyone the right to judge his morality, as far as I am concerned he saw an opportunity and seized the moment. :ok:

I say 'good on him' for being so observant seeing it in the till in the first place. :ok:

I doubt that I'd have the courage to ask the storekeeper if I could have it though, seeing as I'm a bit shy and retiring. :blush2:

Well done serial!  :good:

You really shouldn't be shy Nevol, I take ever chance I get to talk about coins, most bank staff are glad to hear about the merchandise they handle daily. Many don't know what to look for, but are glad to look out the back for you if you talk with them. I got some of my best finds this way

Unicorn

Nice ones Trout, that 1951 looks good.

Pedro, you have excelled yourself once again. Some good new errors coming out of the woodwork lately.

Not sure whether we've covered the below.

2014 Anzac with multiple cuds down the upper to lower lip. A flavour saver and a under the chin cud ending in a nice swirled die crack coming from under HM's chin.

Pedro

Beat me by that much Uni!

This one has a bit more development of the under chin cud.

Pedro

Unicorn

Oooooooo ..... I just love error progression!

Excellent Pedro! :thank_you:

Pedro

A variant of an oldie and one I haven't seen before.

2014 50c - the bubble beside the shield is mainly infilled on this coin (compared to others I have where the bubble is just a plain old circle - more progression Uni!).

2012 50c - unusual "doubling" line on this one. Something seems to have interfered with the strike.
