2 million coins - 'enough for everyone WHO WANTS ONE to get their hands on one'

Reality is the overwhelming majority don't give a continental about coins.

Going a wee bit off track here But i think it is pertinent. :ok::angel:

As far as I am aware the $2 coin is pretty much overlooked in most collectors Decimal collections.
These last few years of these commemorative $2 coins  may just spark some interest in the previously ignored  Aboriginal Elder coins from 1988 until now as well .
The 5c, 10c and $2 coins are by far the easiest sets to complete at the moment and at a fraction of the cost of collecting the 20c, 50c and dollar sets.
So although these coloured coins are a complete pain in the arse to get hold of they may in fact do some good at the end of the day to boost the interest in numismatics overall.

True, but the bower birds complicate the fulfilment of that intention.

Agree with the sentiment, but by collecting the yearly mint set I feel I've always had the $2 covered, as well as the 5 and 10 cent.
As we age we lose three things, one is our memory and arrrrr I've forgotten the other two!

I agree with both comments

I believe that because it is the Centenary of ANZAC, everyone has become more aware of coins that are celebrating the Centenary and everyone wants one/or more to put with grandad's medals etc.

I'll go along with that. Military coins are always a sure-fire winner, aren't they?

And I agree with the other comments too. Even if I'm guilty of being one of those bower birds. Or at least I will be if I ever find any. ;)

The general public only seem to get interested in anything when they see flashing neon dollar signs, and think they can rush in and make a killing. It happens with shares, it happens with cryptos, it happens with tree farms, and it happens with collectibles.

I'm not convinced this is a good thing overall. Yes, it generates airtime and column inches and eBay's profits, but the inevitable crash does lots of harm, and puts people off far more than if the pump had never happened. I'm watching this in the Dogecoin community right now for example.

The one good thing is that for every thousand magpies who swoop in to steal the riches and turn a quick profit, a few will be bitten by the bug and hang around. Whether this is enough to replace the rest of us old farts dropping off the perch every day is debatable... ask me in a hundred years or so. ;)

Oh, and speaking of hundred years, Betty from MNS celebrated her 100th birthday on Anzac Day. She's in hospital, but still as keen a collector as ever. We need more like her!

That's me. I got interested with that Victoria Cross copper ballot thingy. Looking back I didn't even know what's so good about it in the first place. It's nice enough I suppose...

I think most of us could say the same about many of the things we get into. What attracts you to a given thing at a given moment probably doesn't bear scrutiny.. it just feels right at the time, and you go with it.

Kinda like how we end up with our significant others too, I guess. :diablo:

Just received a reply from Ross:

It was  a pleasure to meet you at the Malvern commemorative service.

Your feedback was timely and helpful and with other similar feedback has been the basis on which we will modify the approach to the release of future special  and coloured UNC and Circ coins.
The circumstances surrounding the release of this particular red $2 Lest we Forget coin were unusual but never the less  the points you made are still relevant.

As you have suggested I will look to join the Australian Coin Forum.

Many thanks for taking the time to meet me and for the constructive feedback.

Thanks Fulvio!  I hope Ross does join and will take on board all the comments made here regarding the availability of new issues. It would be wonderful if all new issues, not just NCLT,  became available to the public via the RAM Shop.

It would put an end to most of the profiteering that's been going on for the last few years, especially with the coloured $2 Coins and at least the RAM might get a slice of the profits instead of where it's all ending up now.

I can't see anything to stop it.

The Mint produces coins for Treasury, which sells them to either Armaguard or the banks and other customers. Probably Armaguard. If the mint bought the coins, either directly from Treasury or through Armaguard, there would be no difference, and nothing to impede it.

But, if this were to happen, there would be one massive advantage...

The coins selected for the mint shop could be struck at a lower speed, and with more careful handling. There would be minimal cost in doing this, and massive upside, since obviouslyt the mint would charge a (hopefully small) premium.

And while still business strikes, the higher quality would entice those seeking higher grades to buy direct rather than chase them in the wild at face value.

The only losers would be the profiteers, though they'd still profit, just not so massively (think dealers who sold $50 rolls for $60-100 instead of the $900 for the current release).

5 rubles

Went to a local large Comm bank and they knew to tell that they have not seen any red $2 coins yet and that they would most likely be mixed to circulation so that rolls or bags are not available. That will result in few bril UNC being around and predict a high price. I think someone needs to rob an Armaguard truck to get quality coins.

serial

Lol  5 rubles. I can see the headlines about a brinks truck being robbed with all the coins stolen but the notes left. Police are interviewing local coin club members.

Ozcoins

I spoke to Trout a few days ago.  I have been trying to get some of these.
So far I have been unsuccessful, but if I get some I will do some swaps with my friends here.
