my eldest brother has them but I remember them exactly & see books for sale on ebay that have the same photos in them

I studied those albums all of my younger life

ausjack

At least they're still in the family and not in landfill :good:

Wifey and I did that very same voyage on the Pacific Sun and it was a fantastic voyage.

The highlight was at Iwo Jima cruising about when a large pod of whales turned up.   Fantastic.

A couple of years ago I worked in a recycling plant. Pained me to see old photo albums, historic books and war memorabilia on the line ready to be pulped etc.
I kept an album (pinched it off the line) that had photos of WW1 troops, another album postcards of Cairo from that era and other bits and pieces (even a 38mm brass case from an anti tank round of the Western Front).
Could have kept a WW2 Italian hand gun or a 6" brass shell case (with the date 1944) if I had been daring. Probably all thrown out of nursing homes or deceased estates (along with lots of jewellry that I kept because morons couldn't recognize silver, platinum or Jewish hallmarks and had thrown out with the costume junk).

ausjack

Gee that's sad but yes it's amazing what people will throw out Neal, even the brass shell would be worth a few bucks in scrap let alone the historical value. Makes me wonder how a lot of this stuff gets off base as we were told that if we even took a spent round from the rifle rang and got caught it's a chargeable offence but then when you see what has been smuggled back into oz and off base you'd be amazed, weapons, drugs and even a monkey and who know what else, what the hell they thought they would do with a monkey has me beat but anyway.

good call Neal saving material history

I have been to auction the other way round - I once saw two women bid up a costume jewellery lot which was clearly 3 x gold plate necklaces (probably jeweller's necklaces) as I had picked through it with my magnifier as well - and they battled to $300
even the auctioneer was stunned!

guess what triggersmob

we're gonna do it

looking at booking in a round NZ trip - late October this year (the second grandie is expected Sept 28th so that gives me time to fuss over the new baby down in melbourne and then escape)

I don't fly now so Ihave always  counted myself out of ever going overseas

so the hubby is wrapped that i'm gonna go with him on a cruise

now I have to get myself a passport I think (and a big box of stemitil - just in case)

thanks for sharing as it has inspired me to think outside the square

xx Robbie

(back to work ho hum)

Great news, Robbie. :)
You will have a ball.
Yes, you will need a passport, but not a visa.
Can't wait to see your pics now.
Keep us up to date with cruise date and ship name, when you have confirmed.

cheers will do
we were just looking at the dawn princess - NZ ex Sydney round trip

it is a bit smaller than the Diamond

reckon it would be just as stable on the ocean? (AKA will I be HURLING ALL the WAY??? ha ha)

couldn't imagine not having to cook for two weeks ... or wash up ...

The Dawn Princess was the first ship we cruised on. Still have fond memories of that cruise. It has been revamped now, so should be even better. Yes, it is a bit smaller than some of the others, but I had no problem with sea sickness. Try and get a cabin that is midship, that will help.
When you come back, you go through this sort of downer. Having to cook and wash up again, it's a real drag. :(

They say you put on one pound for every day you are on the cruise and that worked out about right for me. So start your diet now. :)

thanks Steve
the travel agent lady said to the hubby to try to get mid ship
I also need room - too much togetherness could test our 30 year friendship
but the hubby is very active so he will be in the exercise classes with the leotard ladies, whereas I will definitely be in the shops!! so we should get some space

oddly I feel very excited as I had written myself off from every going o'seas

we will go down to the travel agent on Saturday
I printed of the start of a passport application - tearing the house apart in search of my birth certificate .... must be here somewhere .... ha ha

If you want extra room and you can afford it, book a suite or a mini suite or at least a balcony cabin. You can do it all online too, no need for a travel agent.

'booked' today!!!!! yay  !! :yahoo:  deposit in 3 days

11th Nov for 14 days round trip

a little bit forward from midship in a mini-suite as all the mid ship rooms were booked - port side (voyage goes up from Dunedin)

they offered complimentary upgrade but for the moment we declined as we have a confirmed room and location

I am soooo totally nervous and equally as excited

better get that passport organised

thanks guys as I had never thought of a cruise until I started reading about the adventures of forum members here
