It seems beyond belief that these sorts of errors can happen until you bring humans into the equation.  Humans make mistakes and nothing is ever going to stop that.  Most of the PCGS errors mechanical errors, which are data entry errors, a field that is notoriously hard to get right.  If you look at this page you'll see quantified studies suggesting a 0.5% error rate for data entry of mail codes.

Even if PCGS has somehow got their data entry error rate 1000x better than this (which I very strongly doubt) you're still talking an error rate of 0.0005%.  PCGS has graded 2,500,000 million coins this year and assuming the 0.0005% data entry error rate you're talking 1250 mechanical errors this year.  3 a day.  And I suspect their data entry error rate is quite a bit higher than than 0.0005% regardless of how much QC they've got in place.  And as to the wrong label for a coin seeming obvious?  That's assuming the person(s) who put the labels and coins in the holders know anything about coins.  I suspect the people who holder up the coins scan the bar code on the holder and then scan a matching bar code on the coin (which is in a 2.5" saflip) to make sure they match before holdering them up without much further examination.  If I was in charge of that process I certainly wouldn't want to pay someone to examine each coin to make sure it matches the label, you'd need someone who knows a fair bit about coins and the process would add a lot of time.  It's simpler to have a warranty process.

I guess what I am saying is that mistakes are going to happen.  I make them, you make them, PCGS make them.  If it's a simple mechanical error PCGS has a process in place to deal with it, take advantage of the process and move on with your coin collecting life.

Hey, this is the 21st century and PCGS is in leftist California. So perhaps John and Maria are the same transexual?:mocking:

Quote from: 'nealeffendi' pid='95621' dateline='1472140074'According to the PCGS website for misattributed coins they refund the grading fee and postage and insurance costs incurred by the owner. Has anyone sent back misattributed coins and had these costs properly covered?

I've done this a few times, they send a cheque through.

But did it cover ALL expenses like all the postage there and back and insurance etc.

It covers everything but the cost of clearing an international cheque.

That's ok then, thanks for clearing that up Walter :good:

I emailed NGC regarding a mistake they had made with the dates on some of the coins in my wedding set submission late yesterday afternoon.
I received a reply early this morning to my email and the problem was resolved quick smart, Such a refreshing change to the awful customer service that I had become accustomed to when dealing with PCGS :yahoo:

:agreed:
But if you or I were to make mistakes more frequently and on a regular basis and it was affecting our work we would take the necessary steps and we would rectify that situation A.S.A.P.
Maybe PCGS IS looking into the spate of monumental stuff ups that has plagued it over the last few months, I certainly hope so otherwise like any business that is heavily reliant on its reputation the future looks pretty bleak if nothing is done to "Contain" these Blunders.

I found these 2 coins on 2 different submissions on the PCGS shared submission page.
I wouldn't be too impressed if they were my coins.

Captain Cook coin graded MS68

Canberra Florin Graded MS63

Haha! Funny you post that 1970 50, thats mine! I wasn`t too impressed by that grade I have to say. I took a good hard look at the coin and thought it would be a SP69 before I sent it. I found my latest submissions have been very harshly graded.

I think by that image the 68 is pretty much on the money But if the graders can't see that this is a Specimen coin they are either Blind or poorly informed.
I do agree that they were rather "Hard" on your submission though.

Like any business operation I reckon they would periodically assess KPI's. Not that I'm any authority on grading etc but occasionally do encounter what I see as disparity when looking at the registry sets for example. I guess this is only natural to a certain extent when so many graders are possibly involved, but no more or less than what might be expected from a similar pool of ANDA dealers IMHO.

The lack of grading accuracy by a large percentage of ANDA and other dealers is precisely why PCGS and NGC have become so popular.
The TPG's do make stuff ups but not to the extent that dealers do, by a long shot.
My point is that PCGS seems to have an increasing percentage of BoBo's of late that they need to address :ok:

I'm not flying anyone's flag in particular, but please, the only reason anyone sets up an organisation like PCGS is to make money.

Indeed. First published in 1952 and last revised 1966. Long overdue for a review. His name was actually JB Bobo (that's not initials but how he was christened!)

:agreed:
But without the TPG's we would be back to the old ways of overgraded, cleaned and fake coins being sold as righteous coins again.
I was dead against slabbed coins at first But I have come to realise that without them there is nothing to "Keep the Bastards Honest" and now if you want that high grade flawless coin for your collection getting one that has been professionally graded is at least a 99.99% chance of getting exactly what the coin is purported to be :good:
