I already know it will be way out of my price range, but this is certainly destined to shake things up, if only because the PC world will as usual be trying to copy it.

I can't remember if it was abc or sbs that were going on about the new computers the other day and I think it was the chinese are apparenty mading a computer that is twice as quick as anything we make..there's so much cool stuff in china and russia but we don't want to talk about it :(

I'll have to think hard when this goes as it's a lot of money just running one let alone gettin a new one :(

Wonder if the wife would be happy to swap my 6 mth old MBP with this little puppy....shame it's not portable or is it?

My iPhone holds 64x the data than my first ever pc. The memory of my iPhone holds 4x the data my first oc held on its hard drive. I paid $4000 for this boat anchor. Upgrade after upgrade and it is now my shops point of sale machine. The only thing original is the power supply and casing.

Looks cool and specs are solid howeverI think I'm staying away from an apple desktop indefinitely. I don't like the idea of having my pc pre-built for starters and I prefer my main machine to run Windows.

Nah, not going to bait me, sorry.
As I said, like with every other innovation since 1984, it will be copied and become mainstream in a few years.

Anyone remember when I posted about the new iPad that was coming, and asked how we were going to use it? I got shot down in flames, yet now everybody has one (or an equally-capable iPod/iPhone).

Anyway, cool as this MacPro is, it is a professional machine, not a consumer one, and will definitely be priced accordingly. On a par with high-end PC workstations, and double what I'd want to pay. But, give it a couple years, and I can see a used one in my future... :)

According to the benchtesters, my iMac does 17.345 Gigaflops. This new beast does 7,000! That's one hell of a speed bump, and somewhat of an overkill for my purposes. ;)

There is nothing wrong with buying a hugely overspec'd machine for writing emails, surfing, watching the occasion movie or youtube clip, keeping a coin/note inventory and writing on this forum.....as long as it isn't overpriced.

So what if I have enough technology to navigate an 1970s space shuttle into orbit.......you never know when you might need it.

JeffH

The average washing machine now has better than space shuttle computing power. They are using 486 processors, or better!
And check out the latest Samsung "Smart" TVs with the tablet as well as a normal remote control -the operator's manual for one I looked at the other day is 208 pages -not available printed; only in the set itself or as a downloaded PDF. They are causing mass confusion with purchasers who just want to watch TV. Talk about overkill.

Just wait until you're forced to upgrade the OS just to change channels. ;)
