I used to continually upgrade my desktop which used to be a real pain.
I now simply buy a new laptop every couple of years.
My desktop sits unused since its last upgrade to a quad core intell chip with 8 gig ram, a couple of 1 tb drives and 2 x 1 gb vidio cards (sli).
As I don't play games my dual core lappy is all I really need :ok:

I'd bet an iPad would be more than sufficient. I know I get far more use out of my iPod 5 than any other machine in the place, except for watching movies of course...

Microsoft puts a realistic price on Windows 10, the ultimate (as in "last", not "best") version of Windows -FREE!
Free download for existing users of W7 and W8. That may be exactly what it is worth.

If you want to get rid of the annoying icon in your task bar that keeps telling you to register for your free update then find update KB3035583. right click it and select "hide" -you will then need to reboot. You can delete it but it has now been changed from an "optional" update to an "important" update so it will keep trying to download and install itself and you will be back where you started. Three other optional updates at the same time also seem to be intended only to insinuate W10 into your computer.
Whatever you do, don't pre-register for W10. As far as I can work out that will get it automatically downloaded (big, big download) and installed on your computer. It is still in beta testing now; very buggy, prone to crashing and they are promising it next month.

I am now starting to seriously think what my next computer will be (settle down Fulvio) or, at least in the short term, what operating system I will change to. Possibly Ubuntu or similar. I definitely do not like the direction Microsoft is heading with this tactic.

I now have a HP Slate 21 which run Android so it is like a very large (21 inch) tablet.

Works well but still learning certain functions.   Do not run Microsoft Office but does have similar program that open office documents.

So far have found it good.

Here are the specs.....  http://www8.hp.com/au/en/products/desktops/product-detail.html?oid=5381347

only difference is that mine is running Android 4.4.2 KitKat

I just bought a new laptop with windows 8 pre installed.
I am thinking of getting the free win 10.
Is win 10 any better than 8 ?

I forgot to add that this is a Toshiba with the AMD A6 chip, 1TB hdd and 8 gig.
Seems to run all right and the graphics are better than the Pentium i3 that just died (ASUS)

A lot of the pre-release testing was done by guys on Whirlpool,a couple of threads running so well worth a look.Seems OK at the moment with the start menu back, super fast boot & improved security(& probaly easier access for the NSA so don't design a bomb on it!),also better Browser with added features.
I'm sticking with 8.1 for the time being, took a lot of time & effort to get my older printers & scanners working so will wait & see.
Jeff,i hid 3035583 but the Icon in the task bar is back with the latest updates but no  "reserve your copy" showing in the "üpdate manager"

kb3035583 came back for me too. I uninstalled it then hid it and, so far, haven't seen it again.
Apparently in windows 10 all updates are automatic and can't be removed. So, if Microsoft in its wisdom, decides a mega size, multiple foreign language font pack is desirable, everyone will get it -want it or not. Only way to avoid updates would be to never go online. [And then you will never even need the updates to address all the inevitable security issue that seem to arise.]

I wonder how long before they cease support on windows 7 and 8? I suspect not long at all.

Yes AJ might be an old salt but he is not the US Navy.

I already know it will be way out of my price range, but this is certainly destined to shake things up, if only because the PC world will as usual be trying to copy it.

A supercomputer in a Thermos flask.

My sister bought a Mac Book Pro for school and to be absolutely honest it can't hold a candle to my mid-tower computer manufactured for $500 less in terms of memory, processing power, graphics nor even a disc player (which the Mac Book lacks.) In my honest opinion the Mac Book Pro's only real for is that it is Apple branded.

trout

I seriously looked at the Mac offerings and bang for Buck they didn't make it as far as I am concerned.
The Mac's however come with great software that never runs out or crashes, but the prices were pretty much "out there".
I can buy a new windows lappy every couple of years and still get a better deal, and I get a DVD Burner as well :ok:

Yes an old salt from the RAM Jeff :winkextra:
