Goldy's mum dying got me thinking about my own parents, who are pushing 90 now, and since that was kinda depressing, it then led to thoughts about Lizzie, which led to more cheery thinking about our money, of course.

MUCH better fodder for contemplation, no?

So, lets say Liz drops off the perch tomorrow. What happens next?

Presumably, Chuck will want to be King, at least for a bit. He won't be popular, especially since the poms dislike his missus so much. Nonetheless, we'll stick his mug on our coins, and on a new fiver as well.

He'll be facing left on coins, since they always swap directions. God only knows what they'll do with the $5 (though I bet they already have plans in place). A new colour again? Something a little less pink perhaps?

Expect all the current $5 to vanish quickly. They don't have a very long lifespan anyway, and tellers will be actively sending them to destruction as they did with the Federation and light coloured notes. So we're going to have to actively accumulate $5's while we can.

Coins will take longer to disappear I suspect, since the reverse designs won't change, and won't be as easily pulled. Heck, we have half of NZ's currency circulating here already, alongside Euros, US and other coins. If they can't get rid of those, they won't be able to get rid of Liz in a hurry either. But vanish eventually they will.

Then the followup question is, how quickly will Chuckie chuck it in? As I said, they don't like Camilla much at all, and we've already seen one recent monarch pull the pin over a woman. Will he do the same?

For sure we're going to get Wills next, probably in our lifetimes, and possibly quite quickly unless Charles has both his gran's longevity genes AND a thick skin. So I'd be stocking up on Charlie 3 coins (jeez, I make it sound like a Hollywood movie franchise, eh?) pretty early on.

Then again, we might just have another referendum, and elect a President instead. Wouldn't THAT be fun?

That was debated when she first came on the scene, and the eventual outcome was that yes, he can, and she would be queen.

ps - you are blessed having 90 year old parents, I'm like Trout and have been an orphan for much more than a decade

Fulvio

Apparently so. Dunno if its an improvement.. I mean, what next? A papal abdication maybe? ;)

I think the Queen will have a contingency plan that doesn't include her son that has a penchant for old ladies, I think she will force him to abdicate his right to the throne on her death :ok:
I would imagine that Charles's eldest son will get the job (poor bugger).
Anyway I hope old Lizzy outlives Victoria and becomes the longest serving British Monarch in history :good:

papal abdication maybe

yeah -I think it was about the third one in about 500 years, with one (corrected this morning) being a political strategy by the Church

One of the Monarchs titles is "defender of the faith" :ok:

I watched part of a doco on the other week called the Queen and after seeing that I think she's as tough as and isn't going anywhere anytime soon.

They won't necessarily replace the $5 design with one featuring the new monarch. There's no law saying the $5 note has to feature the monarch. Keeping the colour, however, probably is something they'd want to do. Whenever banknotes change design, keeping the colours helps people associate the new design with equivalence to the old notes.

Think of the Federation $5 as a trial run of what they might replace the current $5 design with.

By all accounts, Charles doesn't want to be king. But he's stuck with the job, because his mum refuses to allow him to disqualify himself. As for Camilla, the British public seem to have warmed to her in recent years.

You mention "Charlie 3". While we can know for sure who the next monarch will be, we don't yet know what his name will be. The Royals each have several names to choose from in the event that they become the monarch and they don't always pick their first name; the first name of both Edward VII and George VI was "Albert" and they were both known as "Prince Albert" before they became king.

The full name of the man we currently call "Prince Charles", for example, is "Charles Philip Arthur George", and he can in theory pick any one of those names to use as his reign-name. Even after 350 years, "King Charles" still has a bad resonance in the Royal Family (with the beheading, Civil War and all) and "King Arthur" would be just plain pretentious. I believe he has, in the past, indicated he would prefer to be "King George VII", in honour of his grandfather, but we won't know for sure until accession day.
Waste no more time arguing what a good man should be. Be one.

There's something in my memory banks about the Defender of the Faith
I know it went off the QEII in 1953 penny then back on for the 55 and onwards penny ? And then off for the decimal currency
I know there is a 'Godless Florin' that caused all sorts of kafuffle (Q Victoria)
But now it is not on our decimal coinage

All of the QEII's prodigy have been divorced so it may be hard to get any that have had the one marriage

Yeah - I agree Old Charlie may have been set for being a King back in his younger days when married to Princess Dianna but that all went to the dogs with the dreadful marriage breakdown and the merciless devastation that the media caused to their fragile family

Young William is on top of that business now - smart young man that one (IMO)

When they took F: D off of the coins there was public backlash. Oh how the times have changed. Can you imagine what would happen if the government suggested putting it back on the coins now days.

There was an item on the news this morning about the 6 ladies in waiting for the coronation. Apparently they are all still around and having a reunion of sorts. Anyway, one of them mentioned the annointing oils which is part of the ceremony considered sacred and kept out of public view. The coronation is as much a religious ceremony as anything else. The monarch is the Head of the Church of England and thus Defender of the Faith. Incidentally, the anniversary (of the coronation) is tomorrow.

I dont think that they will be pulled. In the predecimal days they happily had coins and notes of three monarchs circulating at the same time.

My understanding was that the lowest denomination note has to have the monarchs portrait. This was the explanation given in 1992 when there was an outcry about the Queen being on our new $5.

As for how long it will be. Well the Queen Mum lived to be 101 so we may still have at least 14 years before a change of monarch and by then Charles will be in his late 70s.......that is if she hasn't out lived him.
