I don't think its the lowest denomination note, more a matter of at least one of them.

And 14 years is but a mere instant in the grander scheme of things, is it not? I wasn't suggesting it would be next week, but it pays to consider these things well in advance I reckon.

if Charlie abdicates his right to the throne
wouldn't Princess Anne then be the next in line
followed by - is it Edward?

so we might have a Queen Anne on our coins

Princess Anne is 10th in line. Will and Harry are next after Charles, then Andrew and his daughters, so she's not even the first female in the line.

Or Australia may simply become a republic

huh?
really??
it is the first of the brats and then the first of their brats

oh - it's Andrew (oopsie) - you can see that I'm not a royalist - where is my mother when I need her!! (bless her soul)

hum , seems unfair as Anne might just do a good job - if we could get her away from the horses
and girls are more interesting on the coins, they have nice earrings and necklaces !!

nah Trout - we need the Britts to keep us on our toes - bit like having mum to tell tales to
anyways, who would we have then to plaster on the back of our coins (eer the front)

bye for now

I'd vote for a republic :d_sunny: When the debate at old parliament house was on a few years ago I followed it closely but can't recall any mention of coinage. At least with the monarchy we have some certainty about the obverse of our coins. :dontknow:

Here's an interesting article about Prince Charles

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/prince-charles/9700402/Prince-Charles-Im-running-out-of-time.html

So it seems that he is keen on being king.
One of the more poignant comments made was

"He is an age when most people are starting to contemplate retirement, yet he's not actually started the job he has spent his adult life preparing for. That is burdensome."

I hope we continue to have the monarch on our coins even when/if we become a republic.

r9453

Thanks for the link MOR, I don't mind Charles these days. In terms of the OP its probably :off_topic: whether we become a republic or not but if it were to happen the monarch would no longer be our head of state. In that case we'd have to find an alternative for our coins. Imagine that debate. :blackeye:

I will not be attending the funeral, but I will certainly approve of it!

As far as royals go, I think Liz has been a great Queen and long may she reign.

Aside from the fact that the British royals are not much more than unelected figureheads representing a German household long bereft of any real power, I think they are good at what they do.

In my view, Charles is dying to take the throne. I don't think he'll do much with it, but it's the status that he craves.

Everyone knows that Charles will be a caretaker King until Will takes over.

Regardless, it remains a very interesting debate about what Australia will do with its coins and banknotes when there is finally a changing of the guard.

Can you imagine the amount of packaging that the RAM will put out when Liz passes on the corgis to Charles? They must be salivating at the prospect.

I don't know.  There won't be a real need for marketing since everyone will want to get the new portrait.  It might be like the Royal Dutch Mint has handled their change of rulers, a few high priced sets and some lesser issues bearing the 'last' and 'first' portraits of those concerned.-John

When that time comes, whenever it may be, could well be the time they decide to revamp the entire coinage New-Zealand-style and removing the monarch's portrait could well be part of the overall redesigning. Putting the monarch on the coinage is not currently mandatory, from a legal standpoint.

As for "salivating at the prospect", I sometimes wonder if the opposite might not be the case. I've always wondered what the mints will do if the queen happens to die late in the year (After September, say) when they've already struck and sold coins bearing the next year's date with the now-deceased monarch's portrait on them. I think they'll discover then that there are potentially embarrassing flaws and issues with creating post-dated coins.

Now that's a good point, which I for one hadn't considered. Say it happened after they started shipping, but before everything was gone. Would they pull the rest, therefore creating super-rare coins, or would they go full steam ahead and knowingly release what would now be "error" coins?

Given the mint's penchant for making a buck, I tend to think they'd flog anything and everything they could. Let what they'd already made go out regardless, and start making new souvenirs immediately to flog off at a hundred times face value.

What I don't think would happen is a lengthy delay while new designs were created. They'd want to milk it for all its worth, so you'd see a new obverse, perhaps followed by a redesign a year or two down the track.
