What are those flashy areas around the emu, kangaroo and across to the star?

EDIT hehehe should read the complete post, I see what you mean. Could it be a pressure issue?
As we age we lose three things, one is our memory and arrrrr I've forgotten the other two!

i think that is the stuff that this thread is about
'die flash' and then the academic debate about just what it is & why it is

never heard of the term die flash before this thread mind you
but i live n a mushroom as I'd never heard the term grannie bait until i joined this forum as well

ahhh the wonders of numismatics!! ha ha

Is this phenomenon exclusive to pre-decimal coins or is it also seen on decimals?

I was checking some coins from recent noodling, to see which are really worth keeping and saw something similar on a 1981 20ยข. I have a large bag of those in good grades for sorting by mint so I perhaps should put that task higher up my "to do" list. See if I can find the same thing on another sample.
Thinking is dangerous, it makes you think. That\'s why many people avoid it.

if it's die care related then I don't see why it wouldn't be possible

Very interesting, it's looking like a very fine line with a few things that are called different things eg, die clash, die flash, ghosting, die pressure :scratch_one-s_head:
I have marked where you can see different parts, so would this be what they call ghosting  I'm getting very lost with all this, but then that's easy for me to do.

It would have to be a die clash. But very light contact, so as not to leave the usual indentation on the die. I take it there's no depth to the marks, right?

There is no indentation at all. Perhaps the ghosting has obliterated the die flash at the king?

No, how does the oil only reside on the king and more importantly how does it get onto the field of this coin?

Not my coins mate but wish it was :( I'm pretty sure it Neal's and Rob posted the pic on the previous page, I just put arrows so anyone that was wondering what in the hell we're all talking about might be able to see it better but it sure is a ripper of a coin :good:

Yeah Neal's post #75 has the PCGS number and then Rob's post #76 had the pic.

Dug out my one and only 1938 Crown. Have a look in the area of IMP, looks very similar.

That does look like the die could have had a bit of a "Buff" :ok:
