I want to break up a 1988 mint set that I have and put all the coins into 2x2s, so I can file them in with the rest of my coins. My question is though, what value would I put on each coin? :scratch_one-s_head:

hi triggersmob, i would write down  each individual coin value from maccs or rennicks  add them up,then  get a % of each coin from total, then get true price of mint sets sold on ebay , then do the percentage again on each coin , or look up past ebay sales of individual coins and take a average . i hope that makes sense as now i am confused .lol

Wouldn't the value be equivelant to a UNC coin as per maccas catalogue or something similiar.

I do this all the time Mate :ok:
if you need the coin as part of your collection ..............Go for it:yahoo:
if you view numismatics as an investment strategy .......then get a new strategy:angel:
There are far better ways to invest and make money than coins, But nowhere as much fun to:angel:

Purely just collecting for me.

That's the problem I am having.
There is no list for a UNC 20c for example, only spec or proof.

Steve,

It is generally believed that the 1988 20cents was only available in the Mint and Proof sets - so the Specimen value listed is a good guide to the value  - say $15 to $25 for the coin.

The mint sets usually go for around  $30 to $40, so you can see that half the mint set value is tied up in the 20cent coin.  However currently you can buy 1988 Mint sets for $25 on Ebay!

Ok, that gives me somewhere to start.

Thanks :)

I personally think the 1988 mint set is vastly underrated.
The 50 cent coin is one of the best designed 50 coins and the 1 dollar has a great design as well.
The 20 cent coin is just a bonus as far as I am concerned.
I picked one up the other day for $16.07 delivered.
I also consider the earlier mint sets (not those PVC horrors) to be of a better quality than the new sets:yahoo:

Theyre beautiful sets and i agree the 50c is a stunner but theyre just so common. That is why theres no value in them.

Another thing that is so good about 1988 is its the first and one of only a couple years that have all 8 decimal coins in them.

if it wasn't for Mint and proof sets my Decimal collections would be pure crap.:yahoo:
I HAVE found some nice coins in my change and the occasional noodle but NOTHING like the quality of the coins I have taken from the mint packs. :good:

I used to break open sets if I wanted a coin to go with all the other , as in 20c collection but then it worried me that I was taking it out of it's protective case, so now I just buy and leave them in the their case, in the hope they don't detoriate.

Also I was not happy with the staples type or the glue type of 2x2, as some ppl have the opinion the glue may damage the coin and the same with the staples.

Hello all, Most of the fun is in the collecting the differing coins and variaties by breaking up the sets, I don't have a problem with it. Purchasing damaged cases is the way to go and by visiting auction sites. Some times one has no choice but to purchase some good sets to find the required coin/s such as in early Wedding Sets for Specimins, Baby Sets UNC for their particular $ coin, the Heritage PNC for the 50cent...... and so on (I'm always broke!). But it does haver a side line of easing the 'pain by selling off the excess coins. Of course, one also has to accept that by collecting Decimal coins, one does it for the fun and interest. Only a small handfull of decimal coins are worth collecting for a future fund...if one can dare to part with them!

Not yet but that's next, when I can get some money together.

I'm looking at breaking some older sets up.  The single coin value, if you can get the price is usually more than the set.  These can be  jsut under $20 (86, 87 88) on ebay and up.  Some coin dealers have their single coin prices on their sites.  The RAM site has a number of coin dearers listed.
