Quote from: 'trout' pid='43486' dateline='1394401542'I would have thought that to separate the silver from the gold would have cost more than a penny.

I have shown this statement of Captain Ward's to
commercial gentlemen in Sydney, who, like myself,
were quite unable to understand it. I contend that a
colonial sovereign gives the value of a sovereign and
a penny to those who extract the silver.

I read that as meaning the NETT return is a penny profit, after paying for the extraction.

I'd be interested to know how many Sydney sovs were actually melted down. Does this information exist anywhere?

They contain 0.67 grams of silver, equal to 1.53 pence but Watt notes the silver in the sovereign it to be worth approximately 1 pence more than an English sovereign before extraction costs.

According to Watt, almost all the coin made in the colony was re-melted in England, the silver extracted in little more than 3 months of issue. E.W. Ward (Deputy Master of the Sydney Mint) argued this was a decided advantage to the colony as it created a demand for its coins.

In addition Ward stated it would cost about 10,000 pounds to build a plant to extract the silver and cost 7,000 pounds in labour per year. If two million sovereigns were melted a year they would only yield 500 pounds of profit per annum, Watt says it could be done for a quarter of this cost.

I like the term "Official Copy".....somewhat like "Genuine Reproduction" or " Unique Artificial Gem".

Not at all alike. That's like saying the 1927 matte proof Canberra florin is like a genuine reproduction because it was officially copied off the Canberra florin in 1927. They become different things, the matte proof is a rarity in its own right.

http://www.numisbid.com.au/Browse/Coin/3521918--//609/

Probably "Vetted " from a roll I bought from Numisbid last auction .
"  Fifty (50) coins stored in paper roll, uncirculated or better."
This cost me $111 yet nothing special in the A4 paper roll  Maybe a couple of MS63-64 coins , the rest were  MS60-62 but nothing like this coin .
I though we were Mates Walter :dash1:

Most should have been around MS63-64 with the odd MS65. There shouldn't be any MS60-61 - that's a very uncharacteristic grade for a 1964 penny.

It wasn't sold as an original roll, just as 50 uncirculated coins - if it's an original roll I'll list it as a penny roll rather than as 50 pennies - sorry if I wasn't clear about this - if you're not happy with them I'm happy for you to send them back for a refund.
