I can't add events to the Calendar, so I assume regular members can't either.

Is that something we want everyone to be able to do, or do we want tighter controls on it?

Are you sure you can't? On the calendar page down the bottom there's an add public event/add private event. I have tried it as a mod and also logged in as a regular user and added an event too.

I just tried but do not get add public event/add private event.

Some "tweeting" may need to be done for moderators maybe.
