Markn and I recently purchased a 1964 Zambian Shilling struck on a planchet with a security edge. It should have only a milled edge.  We initially thought we had the planchet classified as a Hong Kong 50c as it has the same security edge and was struck by the Heaton Mint also. It is however underweight for the Hong Kong coin so I'm after suggestions for coins of the following:
5.65g or close
Copper Nickel
Security Edge (there are a couple of types of security edge -needs to be dot and vertical line)
Struck at the Heaton Mint

I have been sitting on the couch at nights scouring Krause and I haven't come up with an answer yet. There is a book which I don't have "The numismatic history of the Birmingham Mint", it might hold the answer.

A free mini album and bullion 1966 50c silver round to anyone who can figure out the security edge planchet this coin was struck on!

Interestingly quite some time ago an Australian 10c appeared in a Downies auction struck on a planchet with a security edge!

Got a picture of what the edge looks like? And I guess that the security edge is applied to the blank before striking?

Also, what makes you think it was minted at the Heaton mint? British Commonwealth Coins says that for Zambia "All coins were minted at the Royal Mint, London, England."

pph, I think that I have the Australian 1981 10 cent coin which you are referring to. According to Krause, it is struck on a 1972, 5 or 8 Sri Lanka 50 cent planchet (KM # 135.1). My coin weighs 5.5 g but I have not been able find the Sri Lanka coin to verify that this is the correct weight. Has anybody got the Sri Lanka coin to weigh?

We don't know.  However most ex-colonies coin's in the 1960's were minted in Birmingham.  It could be the London mint though.

Malayan 25c coins are the correct mass but I have conflicting information as to what their edge is like.  And they were last minted in 1961 before Malaysia became a country and issued it's own coins in 1967.  I do not believe the mass of any of the Malaysian coins match that of our coin.

My guess is a Malawi 1 shilling but I can't find any information on what edge it has. There's one on ebay where you can just see the edge but I can't see if it's security or not.

Many thanks pph. I would love to get hold of one of the Sri Lanka 1972, 5 or 8 fifty cent coins to compare the edges etc. Does anyone know where I can get one?

Yeah I thought that but it seemed like the closest match.

Does your coin weigh 5.65g or did you read that's what it should weigh?
