So this was reported in the most recent Independent Coin News - does anyone know where the original discovery was posted?

And I'm guessing we're yet to see a second example come to light?

Any more info on this? What's the mule? 10 cents?

Unicorn

Yes, it was posted about on Facebook back on 24/02/2025. Will upload the pics I grabbed and put them up.

Unverified at the time, but could be a mint sport from back then (after the 2000 was discovered). Why it would be released into circulation if it was mint sport is another question.

Here's the photos that were on facebook. I was hoping there would be flatbed scans at the time so a decent measurement could be done as the photos are taken on an angle, alas.
Personally, I couldn't rule out a misalignment either.

Unless I am reading this wrong they say it is a mule because it has a different $1 obverse. Isn't that simply a variety? To be a mule doesn't it need to be a different denomination or wrong country?

spraggdean23

It does look like a mule with a 10 cents obverse die. It would have to be sent to PCGS to be authenticated.

pra666

Definitely 10 cent obverse. I was able to verify the smaller effigy from Brendan's  pictures.

spraggdean23

What grade would be expected from PCGS for a coin that has been in circulation for around 20 years. Would it be around VF30 or lower?

Mister T

What Facebook group was it on? I'm in a couple but missed this at the time.

Unicorn

It was on "ALL AUSTRALIAN ERROR COINS"

It's still there.

Interesting.

I wonder how many others will be found and if they will have the same standing as the year 2000 version.

Mister T

Surely there are more out there.

Hard to say - the 2000 mule seemed more 'available' due to poker machines and coins still seeing good use, but at the same time, if someone finds one in good condition, I think it will be worth much more than an equivalent 2000 mule.

Mister T

I don't keep much of an eye on Facebook but I assume no others have been found yet?
