Couldn't agree more with you - and coins are not even made with precious metals

WavyTwenty

While I agree, I believe that it's for a coin collecting overall.

Eventually some of the people doing this may get serious and start to join the ranks of long term collectors.  This will make sure that our "hobby" continues for a long time yet.

I'm already starting to see that pre-decimals are loosing their value because less and less people are collecting them.

I have never heard the term ''premedicals'' before. :s

One of many like this, $55 on issue was too dear in the first place.

The hype and insanity around these coins even managed to get an article on a leading German internet news magazine (spiegel online).

I think that should be pre-decimals.

Ah, okay.

Thanks to the magic of edit I've fixed up.  Yes, I meant pre-decimals.

The predecimals/premedicals thing is a non issue. Many of us are older and not spellati spellotrons, we make mistakes, lets just accept that and move on. I find typing the different meaning or context of a word is common at my age -its not a crime and not worth 5 posts over.

Anyway these coins - a complete joke and another nail in the coffin of the credibility of NCLT issues in Australia and the world in general. Bluey is a juvenile programme aimed at toddlers and preschoolers who have just learned how to talk - 2- 4 year olds. How many 4 year olds get $20 plus to buy a coin they can't play with and being muck metal, will never be worth more than a dollar or even less if the Australians demonitise the dollars like the UK did with round pounds in 2016.

Too many of the Woolworths tie ins, have been low quality topics like Mr Squiggle, Wiggles (Lots of cartoon characters with "iggle" in their name isn't there). sports based designs with bad graphic art, Possum Majic etc. Lot of stuff aimed at infantile and low IQ pursuits. The war and aboriginal themed coins are much better. This is all kiddie krap pure and simple.

How about aiming coins at demographics who have money and will buy them.

Plus this limited and staggered releasing of this junk, with all the gimmicks like coloured coins etc - are feeding into the Scambay secondary market which sees idiots selling them for thousands of dollars. Coin collecting should be fun, but its also a serious hobby for a lot of us. I get tired of mentioning I collect coins and the other person asks me how many NFL coins or Star Wars silver rounds I have, when I have zero interest in them. I collect "intelligent" coins like 17th century half Crowns, gold sovereigns and Indian Rupees, not a muck metal dollar with some Aussie Toddler fad on it, or a overpriced silver round with a 1980s cartoon or movie character on it.

Still I will admit its a step up from the crowd who think coins are Bitcoins, game currency or some card game and the mob who collect Trump and Doge coins.

Does anyone here know a guy called "Brismike" on Numista - he attacks me everytime I single out some Bubblegum coin and usually brings up how little NZ issues in comparison and then shows some of the NCLT rubbish from Niue (Issued by Private mints) as comparison.

That's precisely what the RAM has done with these coins - aimed them squarely at the parents of children who are Bluey fans and who will feel some compulsion to buy them for that reason.

But I do think the RAM have seriously missed the market here. This is a coin that should have been either issued for general circulation or sold for just a couple of dollars above face, with mintage in the millions. Whether you like it or not, agree with it or not, or even know about it or not, Bluey is Australia's biggest cultural export since Steve Irwin and thus worthy of commemorating on coinage, especially now while its still popular (rather than like the Mr Squiggle coins, waiting until the show was a distant memory).

Bluey is popular enough worldwide that a million coins would have sold easily. And they'd have avoided all the bad press they're getting for making them such a limited edition run that the eBay resellers have cornered the market on them, forcing desperate parents to pay the scalpers fees just to try to keep their kids happy. Of course, if you've just paid $800 or so for some Bluey coins off eBay, are you going to let your kids touch them? Almost certainly not. Thus, the actual intended market for these coins - the children - are going to miss out.

If someone else is passionately collecting something you personally are not interested in, and they are expressing that passion in a public forum, then insulting it or calling it "junk" is not likely to win you many friends. Suppose someone went around saying "I collect real coins: Roman denarii and aureii, and Greek tetradrachms and decadrachms, not cheap modern trash like 17th century halfcrowns, gold sovereigns and Indian rupees". You're not going to hear that and think "Wow, that there is a real coin collector, I should stop collecting the modern junk that I'm actually interested in and start collecting Roman and Greek coins instead". Rather, you'd probably think "Wow, that guy's an arrogant jerk". Trust me, I've met people with that exact attitude, and I've had that exact response.

We're all on the same side, and have basically the same passion, even if the targets of that passion are different. Coins are not like sports teams or political parties: being passionate about what you collect does not require trash-talking everything that you don't collect. The coin clubs that I'm a member of have an unwritten rule: never trash-talk someone else's passion. The coin club has members who are multi-millionaires and who can afford collecting at the elite ethereal end of the spectrum; other members collect coins from pocket change and buy whatever the RAM churns out. They're both passionate about it, and they're both welcome.

Good points. I was being a snob. But I still don't like these coins or any other bubblegum coins issued by the Woolworths division of the mint. Our Countdown supermarkets in NZ have all be rebranded Woolworths and its been nothing but issues. Issues with the loyalty card and a series of rat infestations last summer and autumn. I used to collect the coloured $2 coins, but now have stopped.

About ancients, yes I agree they would see collecting more modern coins as more basic. Thats me though, I respect and admire Greek, Roman coins but just have not that much interest in them. Also apart from the cheap 3rd to 5th century Roman coppers, I am worried that many better coins would be fakes and I could not tell the difference.

I just ranted about Bluey, because its overpriced and I just don't think it adds much to the hobby. If they want kids to collect them, like you said - sell them for like $3 each or give them away with a Happy Meal. Although I know what happens when they release a in demand toy with Happy meals - pandemonium.

Plus too, they are not precious metals. If they released a gold or silver Bluey coin - that may attract more adult and cashed up collectors.

I did not know how popular Bluey was, as I have not watched children's tv since 1983 and being gay I have no children or grandchildren. But I do know that there are dozens of programmes aimed at preschoolers and babies and could never tell them apart.

They are releasing more of these silly coins - this sudden 2025 release caused queues to form at the mint.

https://en.numista.com/forum/topic168180.html#p1288808 - Numista thread, with Brismike praising them. Him and I don't see eye to eye and you can expect a negative response to my reply saying these coins are even more stupid than ever.

Its true, everytime you think the Australia mint can't issue a more stupid coin issue, they shock us with new levels of stupidity and pointlessness. I mean its a dumb design, usual 1 colour in in every 500 tubes or whatever. Overpriced release and no doubt spivs on Feebay waiting to pounce on gullible people. Apparently none will be shipped overseas (Another way to create a market for marginal products).

Lot's of people queued at the Perth mint to get these too (not me), so as pointless as we seem to think they are, someone out there loves them.
Yes, it will be interesting to see the Ebay prices.
