Have been looking at this one for awhile as well. Was doing some reimaging and something popped up in a few of the new pics.

Looks a bit like an inverted A.
But maybe the crossbar is a bit too high though ?

gnome61

Yes agree, do you think it may have been struck twice or perhaps there is a  possibility of it being a V over an A on the die which could explain the higher cross bar and the smaller loop. I was looking at the shape of the I beside it why I was thinking along these lines as well.

echidna

Close up pics are a bit fuzzy but I'd say that the crossbar looks too high for an inverted A.

Mister T

It does seem a bit high and a little diagonal too but good spot.

The lettering on the obverse is very badly arranged and the 7 in 1976 is very wonky, either the die setter was having a bad day, or we have a fake here. I can't comment on other 1876 sovs, as I don't have one just 1877 and 1878 and they both look well struck.

Then again some Sydney sovereigns of that era do have wonky looking dates, but Melbourne ones don't. All my gold sovereigns are in a commercial vault and I have to rely on photos of them.

Old Thread but its extreme buyer beware with Sovereigns, the latest Chinese fakes are hard to pick from a photo and plenty around.
Gold going thru the roof so it makes it hard to buy slabbed/graded Coins when they are A$1500+ but worth it for peace of mind in the future.

Those damn Chinese communists are a pain in the rear.

Was bought through Noble's auction back in 2017, is an ex-cruzi coin's collection piece from memory. I had the thought it may have been a V over an A, possibly. I haven't looked at this piece in awhile.

Oh, I didn't realise Cruzi had sold his coins. https://www.noble.com.au/auctions/search/?sale=115 is the link.

I noticed his site was gone when I went looking recently.

gnome61

Yes it's long gone now. I did throw it out there that it was happening. I backed up all the site information so it wasn't lost.

Mister T

Anyone have the auction catalogue? What was the reason for selling?

gnome61

The time was right to move away from the coin collecting side of things. It was Noble's Auction 110, November 2015.
