Anyone doing more research into the 1930 Penny might try tracking down issues of the 'Numismatic Society of NSW' Newsletters from the the 1950's or early 1960's.
Apparently Gilbert Heyde authored/hosted an article on the 1930 Penny where it was stated they were first ID in Sydney during the critical Coin shortage during the 2nd WW. This is one of the few facts concerning the 1930 and should be investigated thoroughly as the research in the 1960's seems to have been lost.
Doesn't mean they were first released in Sydney ,may have migrated there from elsewhere but its a strong start.

I have exhausted all avenues to find copies of these Newsletters,as did my Niece who is a Journo, but someone on this Forum may have contacts to find them. Also, it stands to reason his articles would be quoted or reproduced in other Journals at a similar time.

Good luck tracking stuff like that down - if it's not in institutional libraries then who knows.

Yes Mr.T, it was discussed in the 1960's but i can't find that Info. either, some guys from that era are still alive albeit aged.
I thought it would be included in one of the Books on the 1930 Penny somewhere along the line.

Hi Basil, Contact Andrew Crellin from Sterling + Currency, seems he has article's from the South Australian numismatic journal. Victorian Numismatic Society and the Numismatic Society of N.S.W. about the 1930 penny...Also his article on the penny is very well explained..

The 1930 penny in circulation was known to museum officials in Victoria in 1940. There was also a 1930 sold some years ago at Nobles with the catalogue entry stating "collected by my father on a Glenelg tram in 1938". If true then also circulating pre war in South Australia, plus the condition was VF or less so implies a few years circulation wear.
Spent many hours in the Mitchell Library 15 plus years back. They have copies of a number of societies journals going back many years but sadly incomplete with many issues and years missing.
The main hunt for them started about April 1945 in Sydney with a dealer offering to buy them.

Yes Stan,i'll chase it up again but i've read most of the research over the years.
Just trying to get some actual facts.

Hi Neal,as i posted previously there was an auction at the Paddington Town Hall back in the 1960's where the family of the owner stated in writing that their Father obtained it from the the Mint in 1930 but it was circulated so probably the Auctioneer making up a good story for the sale as that was one of the theories(given to Mint visitors) of the day.
That's the problem, its all hearsay, rumours, gossip, theories, opinions and just people joining dots.

The known facts start in the 1940's,every story before then can't be substantiated.
Apparently Phil Downie never saw one until 1948(?) but this too has to be verified.

As we approach the 100 year anniversary i guess we all will be going around in circles again as contemporary researchers look for the missing link/new information.

You may have to directly ask the author.

Hi everyone,

I apologise that I have been off the radar regarding the PNC book I first mentioned just before Christmas.  I'm nearly here!

Following is a copy of an email I sent to dealers and supporters just last week.  I will share future updates on this site.  A big shout out to Mark and the other moderators for allowing me to share this information.

PNC BOOK UPDATE

The third draft of the book goes to the printer on Monday, September 18.
If there are no further production or technical issues, the book will be ready for shipping the first week of October.

Dear Colleague,

This is just a courtesy note to bring you up to speed on the progress of the book.

While the project has taken TWICE as long as I expected, I am also confident in saying that the end result will be TEN times better than I expected.

Once word got out that I was planning this book – well over a year ago – I was inindated with emails from enthusiastic collectors and dealers offering all sorts help. The amout of unpublished material held by colllectors was astonishing.

The two attached files will help explain the depth and variety of the material offered.

File 1/ shows a number of the fascinating errors brought to my attention by collectors and dealers.

File 2/ will surprise many who are used to seeing one – or maybe two – references to a particular PNC in current reference books or online. In some cases, we have illustrated four, five or six variations.

This should have a huge impact on expanding the current market.

There are at least 400 entries that have never been published before.

There are other reasons – already explained for production delays – beyond my control. I hope to have a clean "Bill of health" on that score next week from the printer.

All I can say is that no-one wants this book finished more than I do.  Financially I would have been better off flipping burgers as my namesake would suggest while a persistant health issue was recently diagonised as a lack of Vitamin D!  This project has been an indoor seven-day a week commitment for as long as I can remember.

As outlined in the above introduction, I will followup with an up-date by the end of next week.

Thank you for your continued support ... and patience :)

Best wishes

Greg

Appreciate the positive feedback.
In my post, I mentioned two files I included in the dealers' correspondence.  I tried to include them on this site, but I am struggling to understand the procedure.

If someone could send me step-by-step instructions on how to "attach" the files and send them,  I'd be very happy to share the information

Cheers

Greg
