This will shake up coin selling

"eBay will manage payments for most of its marketplace sellers by 2021, and all sellers will eventually be required to have eBay manage their payments in order to keep selling on eBay."

"Sellers enrolled in managed payments are not allowed to list the following items:
.
.
.
.
  • Bullion (Business sellers may list beginning 23 February 2021)
  • Coins, notes (Business sellers may list beginning 23 February 2021)

.
."

So the upshot of this is at some stage all sellers will be on managed payments (I was forced to register yesterday else I was not allowed to list) and when you do go to managed payments unless you are a business you wont be able to sell coins, notes and bullion on ebay.

I know this will hurt some hobby sellers but it may clean up the number of fake coins, rip offs (like the HH $2 scams) etc as you will know that if it is a business selling you that item then you have the backing of fair trading if anything goes wrong.

Most (90%+) of my ebay coin purchases are from hobby sellers. These include junk silver, choice raw coins and slabbed coins. I get the coins I want without paying the dealers mark up and the seller gets a reasonable price such as selling junk silver near spot. As for hurting "some" hobby sellers I'd counter that it will hurt all hobby sellers as they will have to find some other way of selling and for many that only leaves the dealers and as the only outlet they might just offer a lousy price on a take it or leave it basis.

I think there will always be a spot for Hobby Coin sellers on Ebay, time will tell, anyway 'Trade me' and 'Alibaba' are both looking at the Oz. market so Ebay can hasten its own demise if they go thru with the proposed changes.

So what does "managed payments" entail? eBay setting the prices for you?

Simpler Fees: no more payment processing fees to PayPal or any other third party, regardless of how the buyer pays. Learn more about fees here.

Simpler Payouts: get payouts directly to your bank account, either weekly or daily

Simpler Processes: refunds, reconciliation and reporting all managed through eBay
Once you register, nothing will change in how you sell on eBay until your account is activated for managed payments. We will notify you of your activation date in advance and will ensure you have access to all the information you need to be prepared. After you register, please review your eBay integration and processes to make sure you're ready for activation

eBay fees
When eBay manages your payments, you will pay an updated final value fee, consisting of a category-based percentage of the total amount of the sale, plus a fixed fee per order. Learn more about fees here.

In late March, eBay will begin the process of phasing out completely the billing of selling fees and expenses via your payment instrument on file.
Instead, eBay will collect fees and other expenses, such as those resulting from refunds, claims or disputes, directly from your earnings.
Examples of eBay selling fees include but are not limited to: insertion fees,  promoted listings, listing upgrades, and store subscription fees.
You may find information on fees and expenses via the reports functionality in the Payments tab in Seller Hub.
You will receive a monthly invoice in a new format, but depending on your monthly invoice date, you may continue to receive invoices in the old format for both April and May. You must still pay any outstanding amounts that are reflected on invoices that you receive during this time.  Charges will not be duplicated.

eBay will not be using PayPal and you pay eBay instead.
It is suppose to give buyers more option to pay.

PayPal's fees for payments received have been excessive for a while. Do you imagine eBay will be any cheaper?
I don't.
eBay's nearly 11% on final sales is rude as it is. And now they will want more.
Time to find a new selling platform.

I have said it before and will repeat myself, "time for trademe to expand to Australia". eBay NZ was very short lived in the face of the local competition. My experiences with trademe have all been positive.

eBay continually makes changes aimed at big business sellers and appear to be not interested in smaller and hobby sellers. They have just drifted too far from their original auction model. And I have mostly drifted away from eBay with my selling.

Now if they actually did something about the shonky sellers that would be praiseworthy.
Thinking is dangerous, it makes you think. That\'s why many people avoid it.

Bigfellani5

The problem every non business seller has got is they want they want something done to remove the shonky sellers but everything they need to do affects the good small sellers.

Managed payments will clean out a lot of shonky sellers as going by the new rules you have to be a business to sell coins. Most of the shonky sellers are not businesses. So problem fixed....but at what expense?

Pre Covid Trademe was looking at Australia but as i understood it it would just be section on the current  platform for Australians to sell/trade/buy.As above time will tell.
I read last year Ebay was in the throes of uncoupling its platform from PayPal,i guess this is just another step in that direction.

Just my two bobs worth. Reading about how ebay is out to stick it into hobby coin sellers and the like, I fell into the trap of thinking ebay was all about coins.

Obviously it's not, but looking at what's on offer in the way of coins for sale, why would they care anyway? A huge amount of what's listed is rubbish or low value IMHO, and has been trending that way for years now, so no bonanza for ebay.

Not comparing apples with apples here but, the same trend is also mirrored in offerings from the major auction houses, where a decline in high grade material is evident when compared to a decade or so ago. People are sitting on their good stuff.

Anyhow, there will always be other avenues apart from ebay.

Such as? Coin shows and dealers are no source of bargains. What other options so we have?

Yes,Ebay should re-introduce a listing fee, even if only a $1, and reduce final value Fees, listing Fees will tend to stop the endless re-listing of Junk Coins, its a pain to trawl lisings these days.

I've picked up some good buys on Gum Tree, i was holidaying in Caloundra a couple of years ago and just to fill in time trawled the local area in GT and picked up a couple of Coin bulk buys in the area. Face Book is also gaining momentum but still a sharks paradise for buying/selling Coins.

As i posted previously Trademe was looking at a Australian connection,my Niece is a Journo and she said it all got too hard and went bellyup when the ATO introduced the GST on overseas purchases(Harvey Norman tax) in 2017.
They may still proceed once Covid is out of the way as there should be a way around the GST if the buyer/seller are in Australia.Again time will tell.

Without saying as much, my comment was directed at how humans will always find a solution which suits their needs. Whether or not this is achieved through manipulation, personal preference or mass migration, there will always be an enterprising entity looking to fill a void. There is life outside of ebay.

On another note, doesn't ebay own Paypal?

eBay and PayPal have separated.
