My nephew found this in a dirt lane near his house this morning -Alice Springs. Handed it to the police. Now the wait to see if it is claimed.

Well, that's an unusual find.
I hope your nephew gets to keep it.

OFEC count = 258

JeffH

So does he.
He asked what it might be worth. I think my answer shocked him.

What an unusual find Jeff! Apart from a drop after a theft the only thing I can think of is someone moving house and dropped it. Wow.

I can't imagine a drunk collector would be walking around with them in their pockets. Pretty much guaranteed to be stolen.
It is strange how knocked about it is as well. Shame about that really.

Unicorn

Yes a few bumps in it eh! I was thinking more an accumulation put into a cardboard box to take to a trailer/van and the box wasn't sturdy enough to take the weight and a seam opened enough for it to depart. If you want to see a drunk collector ...... I do try when I'm allowed.  (I'm always on a short lead) :laugh2:

JeffH

It was in the dirt in the laneway so could have been much more battered than that -driven over, walked on.

The coin was not claimed and he now has it back. Wants to cash it in and would like advice on how to best realise the value of the gold.
Any suggestions?
I said I would make an offer but he said not to bother as he would not believe me.

Jeff, you poor bugga, don't be offended by people responses on the internet these days. (I do, but then again I have a big issue with my anxiety too). Just sit back, let it go, enjoy a red (or two) and be happy. The noodling gods will always look after you as you're good bloke.

JeffH

I wasn't offended. I knew that he knew that my offer would be way too low.

Lol! Something to chat about when we eventually get to catch up!

JeffH

A local jeweller has offered him $2,200 -says nominal gold value less 9%. That sounds about right and probably as good as he will get.

Yes, if it means nothing to him on a personal level (I'm big on sentimental value) ..... then he'd be mad not to take it.
