Mister T

I think I have the 1982 edition.
It was good in that it included New Zealand, Fiji and Papua New Guinea too.

Goldseeker

Just wondering for how long the catalogue was published for?

Hi Goldy, I have the 2nd edition  "Alan J Patterson" 1983. I could not find any other issue.
In 2008 I set out to buy every title of Australian book or catelouge on coinage.
I wound up with about 90 pieces with about 30 titles.
About 1/2 of them were catelouges the rest books.
The cats were a range of renniks, maccas etc back to the 60's , books were from kids trainers introducing decimals to unreadable heavy duty volumes about our currency.
I summarised the cats and books and presented this as a article in CAB Jun 2008 v11-05 page 48.
The editor put the books in the mag as 30 odd colour thumbnails on three pages.

Thanks Frenc.  Three editions would have been  a real effort for Mr Patterson to produce. That book was very handy as it gave all the local coins in a nutshell and was a true "pocket size". Not possible to do that now!
At first I was going to buy EVERY edition of EVERY cat ever produced, then I realised how crazy I was and settled for an edition or two of each title. I tried hard to also get every edition of ACR and the subsequent mags, nearly got there before I got tired of it all.

it is not an easy task to collect every aussie coin book made , in fact it might be easier to complete a coin set fred lever

Hi Frenc,  yeh I thought I was going to complete a book set and a coin set, but like any other collector you have to stop somewhere!
When you have thousands of items you KNOW its time to stop. Shelves of books and mags and leaflets, boxes of coins. The problem is the more you find out about a subject the more there is to collect. Try and define what a complete Australian coin set is. Greg McDonald has been trying to do that for decades! Ditto stamps and radios and cars. I pretty much stopped buying stuff a decade ago and put it all onto a data base so I have a chance of finding it.
Madness.

Interesting topic.  When I was working at Cumberland Newspaper Group in Parramatta, I used to be a regular visitor to Barry Sparkes coin shop in Argyle Street. One day, Barry introduced me to Alan.  his was about 1980 so I don't really recall much of the conversation except to say he was a very nice bloke and we traded some banter about our respective background in the printing industry.  The book he produced was a part time hobby as he was a full time farmer.  Be interesting to know what he is up to these days.

he might be quite old now and definitely retired
