I went to the bank today and the laundromat had deposited a $500 bag of $1 coins. I haven't opened it yet but a quick look showed a distinct lack of nice, new, shiny coins!
I am still three short of a full set. Still that is good going and should not take too long to find the last ones.

If we only knew the mintage figures for the A-Z coins...

Anyone taking a guess? Mine: 400.000 per letter.

Triggersmob

About 4500 post offices in Australia, maybe 100 coins each,
so I might guess 450,000.

Well the privy mark "A" coin is a 1 in 10 chance, with 7500 made, so that's 750,000 full set released on top of all the regular circulating ones. So in terms of uncirculated ones, per letter, that's pretty low mintage. less than 3,000 :O

I believe the Privy mark coin in the tube is a 1 in 5 chance rather than 1 in 10.

Australian Decimal, UK Decimal, USA & Euro Coins are what I collect.

I say 1 in 12 as we opened 12 tubes for 1 Privy mark coin.

JeffH

Could still be 1 in 5.
Opening 5 tubes at 1 in 5 chance gives you a 67% chance of scoring one. Opening 12 tubes improves the odds to 93% -that means in 7% of instances of opening 12 tubes you will not score any.
Of course you could score more than one if you are lucky.

[My figures assume that, on average, 1 in 5 tubes has a privy mark coin and no tube has more than one and the distribution of tunes is random.]

I ended up with 5 sets. Two came from LPO, one from a dealer and two from the philatelic section of Australia Post that seems to have branched into coins to supplement the revenue that they haven't been getting from stamp collectors that have been alienated by their money grabbing ways.

I didn't want to but I opened all 5 sets.

The ones from the Local Post Offices (which aren't run by Australia Post), no privy marked A coin.
The one from the dealer, no privy marked A coin.
The two from AP Philatelic, two privy marked A coins.
Pretty glad I got those last two sets. If you haven't gotten one, you might want to try your luck with them.

I see the price for these is getting more reasonable on fleabag. One sold tonight for $147.

I got a "B" in change today.  Very happy about that as I did not have one yet.

As long as it wasn't a "F", that's OK.
