Hi all

I have checked near 25 2004 proof sets all purchased from different customers....one as recent as today and the coins are all going "off". I know I can not be a lone ranger here...has anyone else suffering the same dilemma?

I am not sure what process was involved in minting the 2004 holographic $1 coin But I am certain that this coin is responsible for the detrition of the coins in the 2004 proof sets.

Yes, all 16 of mine have "gone".

I wrote to the RAM about this very problem some 12-18 months ago and there is another thread on this topic by the way.

I was informed that the deterioration of the set was due to poor storage and handling by me and if I could prove to the RAM of my purchase from them, they would bive me a $50 voucher for each set affected.

However, I have been to quite a few coin shops and asked them to check there 2004 sets and you guessed it, they have all deteriorated the same as mine and it would appear the same has happened to anyone who has a set and I have it from first hand that one gent has 13 sets as he went right through all the varieties.

I am still awaiting response from the RAM and in particular from one certain Helen who is still investigating the problem.

Does anyone have a set that has not gone off?

That's a pretty crappy buy back. They were $80. And that was over ten years ago.
It's not like anyone spent $80 on the set, to own the coins at face value.

HOGWASH
These sets were sealed at the mint, So whatever the problem is it was sealed in there by the Mint and to suggest that you are responsible for the damage is just plain Insulting.

Shane I checked my set last year and it was ok
I was alerted to this deterioration mostly on the hologram $1 and was happy to see my one and only set purchased from RAM was uneffected

Sounds like the plastic or the seal was faulty
Goldie - Helen may be the mint shop manager but I think she has moved up into s higher level position
I was talking with her about work there a few months ago & i think she mentioned s change in her role

I strongly suspect that this problem with the 2004 proof sets has absolutely nothing to do with the sealing of the plastic case or what plastic it was made of.
The $1 holographic coin is the cause of this, I have No idea how the hologram was attached to the coin but I strongly suspect that some idiot used PVC to manufacture the holographic film used for this coin.
ALL the sets that I have seen that have been affected look to have PVC damage on them.
It would only take a minute amount of PVC to cause this sort of damage considering the tiny amount of air inside the case :ok:

Just another SNAFU by RAM and don't hold your breath if you expect them to fess up to this and offer reasonable compensation folks.

Just dragged mine out to have a look at it.  The Obverse side of the set looks to be ok. However on the Reverse side, same as the Hologram, the 3 coins nearest to the $1 are starting to discolour on the edge closest to the $1 coin. Not by much, only a couple of millimetres but definitely noticeable. The 50 cent and $2 coins are not affected as yet.
