Quotemost raw coin auction houses wouldn't get any business if they started honestly describing their coins.

This is quite Sad really.

Sad but true that the auction houses have to resort to dishonesty to sell
but thanks to  PCGS and other respectable TPG who are helping to weed
out the garbage. The only problem with this is the high proportion of
ungradable coins being sold on ebay and the like .It's a minefield out there
It\'s not about who you know it\'s about what you know

Live online bidding for raw coins is a goldmine for auction houses today. The technology for high resolution imaging is available, yet there is only one auction house that i know of who uses this technology.

A few of them use it but many more use under exposed or just bad quality photos
so as to not allow you to see the surfaces properly

Gold mine or mine field? 5 years ago it was a gold mine but most raw coins available via public auction today are either ungradable or overgraded to the point where they're too expensive. Unless you view them the odds of making money are slim to none.

Due to inexperienced and gullible people public auction houses will always be winners.

It would be nice to have a full set of MS high grade coins, but for my pocket the scarcer years are way too expensive, then add to this the mine field of what you are all saying about dodgy images, it's just one of the many pitfalls.

Not so long ago I dipped my feet into deeper water only to be disappointed by being sent the wrong coin, and the coin I paid for was never located to my knowledge. I was refunded in full, but the disappointment of not receiving the coin I wanted has left a bad taste. This is not ebay I'm talking about either!

My interest for a long time now has been varieties, and in hindsight, something to stick at. I love chasing down some of the scarcer known varieties in higher grade, to me it doesn't matter if the coin is off by half a grade, I'm still getting something that is scarce and becoming more desirable. At the end of the day I only pay what I can afford, and finish up with a coin that I'm happy with.

''BAD TASTE'' Starting off as a know all bugger all inexperienced gullible collector not only left a bad taste. I stepped on a lot of land mines, fell into pits and deep water. Today i still make mistakes but not the $1000.00 ones. My main defect today is buying that which i cannot afford and end up eating noodles and baked beans. I need to go to a numismatic detoxification unit and do long term rehab. LOL. I love collecting aussie pre-decimal banknotes and would not give it up even for a romp in the cot with Pamela Anderson.. Love noodles and baked beans lol!! At my last job I ate a bowl of those noodles with the little spice sachet every day at morning tea for 13 years. During that time I must have paid the private school fees for my doctors kids while he treated me for gallbladder  symptoms. After I retired there was no need for the noodles anymore, as if there ever was in the first place, and stopped eating them. Guess what? The pains went away and have stayed away. In my doctors defence, I didn't think to tell him about my dodgy diet, didn't think it was important :dodgy:

To keep on topic, I wonder how the auctions houses would grade Pamela, these days?

I have a problem working out how running along a beach, wearing a skimpy swimsuit (in slow motion, of course) is factored into the grading.
Thinking is dangerous, it makes you think. That\'s why many people avoid it.

Jeff, if it were an error coin I'm sure it would help make the cuds stand out.

:laugh2::laugh2: you blokes are pretty tough, but I'm hesitating saying anything to do with slabs, would hate to pre empt anything  I reckon some of our auction houses may go for "practically UNC" though!

She was actually on All Round to Mrs. Brown's a few weeks ago and looked well for 50. She seemed pretty grounded. (Could have been the effects of gravity).
