Hi Fellow members, Need your advise. I was looking at a 1961 coombs /Wilson ten shilling banknote. I was using the led light from my loupe to check for folds, bends and the note curled up from both ends almost to a circle. Anyone have an idea why?:yahoo:

That is very strange, Maybe the note has been sprayed with something.
Spraystarch?

Yeah, possibility its one of those notes that are being 'refurbished' and also copied in China,ABC article on them last year.

Strange indeed. This note had full sheen, raised ink, sharp watermark and very crisp. I have noticed that my other 10/- shillings notes do very slightly curve when I use my led light which is a strong light. Could it be that the paper from that era has a reaction towards the strong led light? I am going to experiment with a uv and incandescent lights. This note was definitely original. Don't you just hate it when you become baffled.

I just put an uncirculated pound note in front of my 370w 9 inch spotlights that i have fitted to my Disco2 and it didn't affect the note one bit.
The note got quite warm but it didn't curl up or anything.
These lights are WAY more powerful than an led loupe light.

Nice lights. But extensive lights as these will reduce the amount of sheen on Australian pre- decimal banknotes.

I don't make a habit of putting notes under my spotlights, I merely did it to see if the note curled up or not.

Your right about the sunlight. Trouble is auction viewing rooms are indoors. Maybe they should start having outdoor auctions with a country and western band. LOL.

I am certain that if I was looking at a note and it curled up under a bit of led light I wouldn't be bidding on it.

Nice spotties Trout! :good:

I wonder if the note had been ironed at one stage? (One side more that the other perhaps? :scratch_one-s_head: )

They are GREAT Spotties and at a lot less than $200 with a heavy duty wiring harness provided as well they are also a bargain to boot :Dance2::)

Yes this reaction to such a small bit of light/heat rings ALL my inner alarm bells.
A genuine untouched note does NOT do this So there Has to be something "Dodgy" going on with it :ok:

My fresh crisp mint state Australian pre-decimal 10/- banknotes R11 to R17 do very slightly curve under a led light. My conclusion is that the note in question has never been exposed to any light at all. Has been taken out of a bundle and put away. This note was a pristine. I believe that the extensive curling of this note was due to first time reaction to a strong light. Australian pre-decimal banknotes that have been exposed to light over a long time lose there sheen and do NOT slightly curve under strong light...

If that is the case then ALL paper banknotes fresh from the presses would react in the same fashion, I was around when paper notes were being used and I cannot recall anyone noticing this happening to new notes.
